Handbrake

Recommended Posts

So the handbrake on my 150 TDi Exec Estate has started sticking.  Normally when I pull away from first start the handbrake automatically disengages, but I recently I haven't been able to pull away because it has stuck on.  The maxi-dot displays a warning, btu it takes a few waggles of the switch to turn the handbrake off.  I use autohold, but this has also been disengaging when the handbrake is stuck (ie the light goes off on the switch).  Has anyone else experienced handbrake issues?

I've not experienced anything like this before... Would definitely get it checked as a priority at the dealership or a specialist garage though!

One for the dealer to sort! Thanks for the info.

Hi @superbrex - did you manage get this resolved?

I picked up my 150 manual yesterday. Whilst generally over-the-moon with it, I have had a few occasions already when the auto brake has failed to disengage or been very hesitant to do so.

Having done a bit of searching I'm praying it's not going to turn out to be a lingering niggle that might spoil an otherwise great car.

Can you let me know how you got on, and if resolved, what it was?

Thanks....

Hi, I have not managed to get to the dealer yet as my local one has decided to go into administration and the next one is a good few miles away. My car has behaved itself recently but on Friday I had to move it a couple of feet forward to open the garage door. Just hopped in the car started it up and it would not move. Realised it would not move with my door open so this may be a learning curve. This is probably another safety device ! This probably does not help you much but you never know. I do hope you enjoy your car as much as I do.

Thanks @superbrex - I don't think my problems relate to having a door open, seatbelt off, or any other 'banned' activity... It'll be interesting to see how you get on over the next few weeks.

I got into the car this morning and the handbrake didn't automatically release as I went to drive off. Switched autohold off as a result and made a 45 minute outbound trip just using the handbrake manually as needed. Then switched autohold back on for the return trip. Only a couple of opportunities for it to take effect on the way back, but it did seem to be working fine. I'll see how it is tomorrow...

You do need to be physically stationary for a second or so (with your foot on the brake pedal) for the auto hold to kick in, look at the dash and you will see the green (P) symbol come on (which will turn red if you put the handbrake on or open the drivers door,,, where the car will put the handbrake on automatically)

Thanks @Gizmo68 - it's fine when it comes to applying it, the problem comes when it's time to release it... A good few times now it's simply 'stuck' on and refused to disengage. Hopefully a temporary blip - we'll see over the next few days I guess. Not going to let it spoil my overall (positive) impression of the car!

The only time mine will not release itself is if I have opened my door (so the car automatically applies the handbrake) I then need to push the handbrake button for it to release, this is perfectly normal though.

Interesting - I thought that the 'true' handbrake (red symbol) automatically released as you went to drive off too. It wouldn't explain the times when mine has 'stuck' on the green autohold symbol, but might explain a couple of others!

The parking brake is automatically turned off when you start driving, if the driver's door is closed and the driver is wearing a seat belt.

That's what I thought was supposed to happen too...

Hi just registered and what an ordeal that Was!,

I have the same model on order due April what are your thoughts on the car apart from the handbrake problem you mention.

Aside from the handbrake thing, early indications (3 days!) are that it's absolutely great. Looks beautiful, drives smoothly but with plenty of grunt when you need it, masses of space and loads of kit. I'm sure you'll be really pleased.
