Bi-xenon head lights. Is it just me

Featured Replies

or do they look a lot better than the haligen that come as standard?

I think so but I'm not sure they look better enough to justify 1k

Can you just get xenon dipped beam or do you have to fork out 1K for the Bi-xenons rather than halogen?

Bi-xenons only

1K would be too rich for me, the Halogens aren't that bad. And if it came to it you could just fit a £30 ebay set if your MOT'er is prepared to pass them without washers and auto levelling

They look better with the engine on and off.

The bi-xenon's have projector lenses and are darker so look nicer than the big, bright halogens.

When not turned on you get a nice LED strip for the DRL function.

Then when turned on at night they look even better!

£970 is a lot though.

I think my FL has projector lenses  (On the dipped beam) They do look a bit nicer but I'm not convinced they do anything to make them brighter or more focused. My B5.5 Passat had them as well and the lights on that car were bordering on dangerous

They do, work better too but then they should for a nearly 1k option.

I dont have them on my Octavia, do on my Golf. I cant say I massively miss them when driving the Octavia...given how badly its depreciated rather glad I didnt spec them.

I had these on my previous Mondeo, and I have them on my Octavia Vrs, if you do a lot of night driving these make a massive difference IMO, I would have these ahead of many other options like: heated seats even aircon.

They are on the Octavia.

Agreed. First time I have had a car with Xenons; big improvement.

Had my first taste of Xenons on an 09 A4, chose them as an extra on my 12 Ibiza FR and now have a 12 Passat with Halogens. Ensured Wife's Mazda was specced with Xenons as, IMO, there is no comparison - much better for clear and enhanced visibility.

Pleased my imminent vRS has them as standard...

IMHO xenons should be a factory standard for mandatory safety compliance.

There's really no match with any halogen, and I specced them on my Elegance when no AWD VRS was yet available.

Would like to test LED which should light even better.

I driven cars with better halogen highbeams than the Xenons on the Octy...

Would be fun to try LEDs, just too bad they are not too good in wintery conditions.

The bi-xenon system on the Octavia is pretty weak IMO.

It might be weak compared to other makes but when you compare it to Octavia's halogen system, it is better.

Halogen are a very old technology and very inferior.  I'd never have a car with them as my daily again, Xenon or LED only, light output is so much better.

I have bi- Xenon's on my R36 true cornering lights in the same unit and are great, but  they pale next to my missuses Renault Kadjar with Duel led lamps with auto high low beam that senses another's cars tail/headlamps quicker than you could react , the light is incredible but not flashed at once . Led lamps also do not require washers like Xenon's do , i don't know why

I speak from my experience only and there was/is no match. I must add that - at least where I drive - allowed halogens are really low powered and therefore dim.

I wonder why LED are supposed to be be not good under rain/snow.

Dummy law, I bet. A dirty glass on the headlight is a dirty headlight regardless of the technology. Can't see how could it be different...

My guess would be its because they produce a very white light which isn't great for vision in snow/fog etc. A yellow light is better in these cases. I guess it wouldn't be that difficult for manufacturers to engineer some was for the LEDs to change colour during adverse weather however. Maybe they don't because the trend is for cars to have nice crisp white lights.

The problem with LEDs are that they dont give off enough heat to melt snow and ice.

A friend mine is a taxi driver, and has a Volvo xc90 with LEDs. Brilliant lights, but he says they freeze over quite fast when the conditions are bad

Got it. So the issue is problem on the "glass" of the headlights which should be someway kept warm.

Correct.

But its only in certain conditions its a problem, so all in all I think I would want LEDs :)
