Apple having a laugh

Apple says it expects its users to replace their iPhone and Apple Watch after (more like, every) three years.

The company adds that it expects a Mac user to replace their computer after four years

Upgraded my wife’s 7 year old Sony PC (Extra memory  £25, new graphics card £25, 250gb SSD £65)

Works extremely well on Windows 10 should get another 3+ years out of it.

Apple Fan Boys are paying fortunes.  I ask the question are they mugs?

The OS is nice, but I do agree that everything being soldered down is starting to get more than a tad tedious.

My iMac was with me 7 years before I replaced it; It had a few more years left in it easily. I'm sure they expected me to replace it after 4 years.

I'm sure Sony expects their customers to replace their computers before 7 years, too.

I'm not sure your post has much of a point?

Most electronics companies 'expect' their customers to replace their kit every few years, including Sony. Why else would they keep adding 'new' & 'novel' features, most of which are pointless, but make the older stuff either redundant or less compatible.

Shut up and make your offering fanboi

MS dreams of being able to force people to do this as well.

Partly it's planned obsolesence and party it's driven by consumers that want ever thinner phones ever cheaper. It makes the phones cheaper to build and thinner if they can seal the whole lot together. The battery becomes structural.

Read up on Moore's law and you might understand why they have this expectation :)

Mobile phones are getting bigger ;)

yes...   awaits flaming from the apple fans...

Seems like a pretty normal business model to me. Car companies expect people to replace their cars after 3 years too even though they don't explode after 2 years and 365 days. If everyone replaced their stuff after a much longer period of time than expected, then tech would likely be much more expensive than it is now and probably not as advanced.

My Mac Book Pro is over 5 years old, never missed a beat, I reckon it should be good for another 5 years at least....................

You're right, but please don't refer to Apple users as 'fan boys' as I find it insulting and derogatory.

I have had my iMac for 7 years now but eventually it will need replacing.

I have the Apple watch but won't be replacing it when it needs replacing as £300+ is just too much for a fancy smar****ch.

My iPhone i replace every three years or so, wife has the old one when I get the new one.

iPad every 4 years.

Eventually things will need replacing as they are no longer able to cope with the most up-to-date software.

Apple don't publish EOL dates for their software which is pretty terrible really.

MS is hardly altruistic but at least you know how long your stuff will be supported for.

Sorry - It's got to be said, so I'll be the one to incur wrath...

Apple fanbois - putting the **** in smar****ch.

:p

To be fair, for mobile devices, they're probably right on the numbers, I've say most people replace their phone at end of contract, so 2 years, I normally take about a year to destroy a phone. Most people keep a desktop computer longer, and to be fair, I don't think most cars are planned to last more than 5 years any more.

Sounds like a 'fan boi' to me.

It's not just Apple being iffy though (I think). I'm a bit miffed that Samsung look like they won't update the Galaxy Note 3 any more, so the security holes left in Android 5 won't be fixed. It's maybe 2-3 years old? I know it can be rooted (unofficially), but I couldn't find a root package that seems stable and where everything works.

I have a couple of Sharp pocket PCs from the 1980s -  I can still use them, they work I can transfer data to and from them, they use regular batteries (AA).   - I wonder how many of today's items (phone, tablets etc ) will work in 30  years time?

I also still have the solar calculator I used at school in the early 90s.

Cars may not be designed to last much more than 3yr but the sale of goods acts would probably disagree with that, up to 6yr anyway.

Batteries in devices are often getting pretty shoddy after 2yr even if they are replacable the cost of replacement is often a decent percentage of a new device.

Plus how many of us can be arsed changing them over getting a new toy.

Google and Microsoft have similar policies.

Pretty sure Dell and all the other firms have an EOS policy for all their devices

This is why i switched to android and use a chromebook, I still think google want me to replace my tech every 3/4 years but they cost less to start with and don't become obsolete after a few years

Sounds like a 'fan boi' to me.

No, NOT a fan boy at all.

I just have tech that seamlessly works & syncs together, nothing to do with loyalty.

Google likes you to change often as well

Operating system supported for 2yr from release.

Security patches for 3yr from release or 18m after sales stop.

MS is a lot more generous, Win7 will have been supported for over 10yr when it goes EOL.

Not just apple that have this policy all major electronic giants have the same policy and expectation of customers if you believe otherwise then you really are living in cloud cuckoo land.

Yes there are people who go by these expectations but they probably have more money than sense or have a lot of disposable income.

Since moving to the iPhone in 2009 I'm only just onto my third (3GS, 5 & 6S having had the first two for just over three years each) before that I used to replace my phone at the end of contract every 12/18 months so a significant improvement I would say. I've had two iPads in 5 years (iPad3 & Air 2) both of which are still in the house and are used everyday the older one having been given to our little lad. Our Dell PC has a build date sticker of January 2010 and will not be replace till it dies as it's only used for internet and Photoshop use. I've had my Nikon D90 dSLR for coming up to 7 years, with no firmware updates for about the last 3 years at least, with absolutely no intentions of replacing it and my Yamaha A/V amp is approaching ten years old and only being replaced with this year's release, (Yamaha release a new range of amps just about every year in a similar vein to mobile phone manufacturers), because I want to move over to an amp with HDMI inputs and have all the devices connected to the amp via HDMI so as to clear up the back of the plasma..... Oh by the way that is 8 years old now and still going strong.

In answer to the question "are they mugs?".... If someone has the money to replace perfectly good working items for this year's model then go ahead and let them. I wish I had the disposable income to do it myself and believe me if I did, I would......

But that is obviously not limited to users of Apple products is it?
