The battery as the new frontier

A curious thing to accuse someone who's a hobbyist, even in an exotic field like cave diving, of.

Exactly...like UK mountain rescue teams & RNLI...UK Cave rescue are all unpaid volunteers....just that they are full of "hobbyists" who are very good at the hobby & know way more than any bystander..& most self proclaimed "experts" for do the same hobby "occasionally"....

I used to advise some of the MRT lot & believe you me the amount they have to hold their tongue when they are out in horrendous weather looking for some idiot who has gotten lost with no maps etc....

Like in this case they are working their socks off & Musk comes in gets in the way & posts videos up inside the caves on Twitter/etc & brings all his lot & sub etc basically "I can save the day"....

The fact the sub is of no use in this situation & looks like a giant suppository, & Musk appears to have annoyed the experts there, telling him "to shove it somewhere it will hurt" I think is most polite comment I've heard...

On this basis Trump is an American hero and the greatest threat to the free world is a guy who has actually set out and achieved remarkable goals.

Thats the modern world we now live in.

& both achieve what they do off the back of other people hard work.....

just that Musk is very good at flattening anybody who is a whistle blower...& there have been many who have complained at the conditions at his factories....much like Apple/ (the late SJ)...and the bad conditions at the factories where the apple products get made...

They all thing they are like the old philanthropists....but they aren't then big old ones actually looked after & improved the health & welfare of the poor & their workers buy building hospitals, towns, house, schools, libraries etc.....

Musk is just in it make vast sums of money & get max PR...(like most USA big business...in fact like most big business these days)...the research side is him proving he has enough money to get his way no matter how stupid the idea...just like the sub...

But after this escapade & the stupid useless EV logging truck...just proves how much utter Hype there is & much the industry (especially EV) is just full of big ego & very little actual substance....

He landed the rocket boosters back on the barge at sea.

He has contracts for satellite insertion.

His boring company has signed a contract with Chicago to provide the high speed rail infrastructure.

He makes cars.

Sadly anyone can throw muck.

Same can be said for all things when you look at it cynically. Car industry? Facelift model with just a new headlight design, award winning engine that's a slightly tweaked old one. Smart phone industry? hype around bezel-less screen, hype around useless features like dual camera. Video gaming industry: hype around new releases that doesn't actually represent gameplay, paid positive reviews.

What's different with EV and autonomous driving industry is that it is completely changing transportation ecosystem, it is disruptive and it is difficult. The media is more to blame than the actual industry, "battery breakthrough" headline is used way too many times, for example. These things take time, and improve with each iteration. It is idiotic to slate EV and expecting 600 miles out of it when long range EV industry is less than 10 year old in comparison to 150 years of ICE development.

You are comparing modern Lithium Ion battery to that?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electric_vehicle#Reintroduction

"As of May 2015[update], the United States had the largest fleet of highway-capable plug-in electric vehicles in the world, with about 335,000 highway legal plug-in electric cars sold in the country since 2008, and representing about 40% of the global stock."

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automotive_industry

"The automotive industry began in the 1860s with hundreds of manufacturers that pioneered the horseless carriage. For many decades, the United States led the world in total automobile production. In 1929, before the Great Depression, the world had 32,028,500 automobiles in use"

Tell me again how Mr Volta's experimental battery is of any relevance to modern mass production electric vehicle?

He didn't.....the workers that he bought & the companies he started & bought out did....

All he has done is throw money & demands at a problem..his personal ideas...that's all.....

& anyone who states that he balles up gets flattened & lawyered over....."get with the program everything I do is awesome"........sorry no its not......"well then you're a pedo"....nahnah nah...

like a little spoilt brat that needs putting over the knee & given a good slap...

Its called lead by example...plenty of other companies/people doing way more important things for the human race..just they don't PR the stuff to death like he does.....like turning up at the caves with a camera crew with steady cams etc...& filming (got as far as cave 3)....just to put on Instagram etc....

Sorry but its all about HIM...."look at me"......

Easy because the modern ICE vehicle & engine is way different to those even 30yrs ago....let alone 100yrs ago.....so to say that ICE has had longer to develop & the battery hasn't is disingenuous...

Interesting.

Note the lack of a battery conditioner/heater so if you leave the Model 3 outside, and if the weather is very cold, one could have fairly rubbish range to start the journey off with, unlike the Model S, and our Bollore EVs, which can have the battery toastie to have max range available when used first thing in the morning.

Firing up the car via a mobile phone up, when one is having one's cornflakes, might help a bit, like you can with the Zoe etc, might help somewhat but I doubt it would make much difference.  Alternative would be to have the car in a garage all nicely up to ambient home temperate but that does not sound like a practical solution for many.  Needs a better cold climate solution for the model 3, that is if there are many cold climates left after climate change.

Tesla’s natural advantage is it’s domestic market where overwhelmingly a BEV will be a ‘second’ car with natural factor being choice of vehicle on the day or specific to a destination comfortably within range irrespective of temps.

^^^ So would that be a plan to make 3 Million Electric cars a year by 2025 so is that including the Skoda and SEAT/ Cupra ones they would make?

(it does say between all the brands.)

As it is they make 1 million Skoda a year and maybe 1/2 a million SEAT (& that new brand Cupra), and they are to be introducing EV versions.

Do they just not want to not include Skoda & SEAT/Cupra in the Press  Releases ever or none European Journals can not be bothered naming all the Brands because VW Group will be off loading both manufacturers sooner rather than later.

Or do they just not want Skoda & SEAT/Cupra associated in peoples minds with the scandal ridden VW Group?

Over 10 Million cars 'Delivered' in 2017 according to the boss man.

Volkswagen Group delivers 10.3 million vehicles in 2016.mhtml

^^^^ I get the impression Wolfsburg regard them as a bit of an afterthought.

Ryeman,

Sometimes until people that know their stuff check what corporations are producing you never know what is what,

there is lots of kidology going on with batteries and motors for various applications.

Not just giving high figures but making some appear lower.

I have this motor and battery and knew from getting it that was not all as the scores on the doors showed.

(they have been changing things, but sometimes the early versions can be the ones you want while they were stretching the legality of things.)

The battery is £715 and can supposedly be charged 700 times.
