Which Oil?

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Just noticed I (well, the vRS) could do with a top up of oil.I was wondering if anyone had a favourite they would care to recommend. The car was on variable servicing but I changed it to regular 10,000 intervals. Oil was changed at the 10,000 mark (using Shell Helix if the service report is to be believed) and I am now at just over 15,000.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Hugh

Should have checked the FAQ first, shouldn't I??!!

Carry on using a Longlife oil to give your engine the best protection.

Hi Dennis,

I think I'm going to go for the Shell Helix stuff if I can get it as that's what was recorded on my service document at 10K.

Off to Halfords at lunchtime to fight with the Novaboys for a parking space....aaaarrrrgggghhh!

cheers

That should read 'Denis'.

Many apologies!!

Hugh

Halfords should have Castrol Longlife SLX2 since that is where I bought mine. But whatever you do buy, Hugh, make sure the container says the oil conforms to spec VW 503 00.

TY for correcting the spelling mistake! :)

Thanks Denis,I'll make a note of that. No problems with regard to my spelling incompetance as my surname is usually mis-spelt as a matter of course,so I try to make sure I don't do the same to others............:)

Cheers

Hugh

So, what happens if it doesn't conform to spec VW 503 00?

your car turns bottle green in protest.....

I really can't see the point of putting in Longlife oil if the car is on fixed servicing. Hugh - how many miles a year do you do?

Probably 15-17K P.A although I'm not quite sure yet as I haven't been in my job for a full year yet.I got the vRS in early January with just under 2000 miles on the clock and I'm now at 15,500.I managed to get some Castrol Longlife SLX2 yesterday and topped up using that. I'll keep an eye on this as the car has drank a little bit too much oil for me since the 10K service. In it's defence though there has been a few long haul trips involved since the 10k service and the Golf GTi 2.0 I used to drive (MY 2000) used to drink about a litre every 5-8K so it's a lot better than that!

Longlife oil gives better mpg, better protection for your engine and, significantly, those VAG engines for which it is specified are designed to take full advantage of it. If you use oil which doesn't conform to VW 503 00 - or whatever spec is appropriate for your engine type - then you can't opt for variable servicing. But in the end it's down to individual choice. It amuses me that some owners are prepared to spend a fortune on expensive body treatments (eg Swissol), use Optimax instead of other cheaper 4 star fuels, spend a fortune on expensive rubber and on mods designed to make their cars go faster, and then economise on oil. It doesn't make sense to me. :(

Sits here feeling all smug that Denis's previous post does not apply to me ;)

Nor me...I economise on *everything*... :D

I was thinking the opposite to be honest, but each to their own :D

hmmm budget engine oil

Any idea of what the cost of the long life oil is? Haven't had the chance to check it out yet.

Budget oil = budget protection. Fabia, presumably your car is insured TPFT only to save money too?

Castrol Longlife SLX2 is around

Do most people here actually get through that much oil. I have always got whatever car I have serviced annually and the majority have not needed much in the way of oil in the interim (even the Moggie isnt too bad). Does the Octy use a lot of oil then?

For info, I do approx 12,000 miles pa.

No, I just get my oil changed at service...1 year or 10k miles, whichever comes first...

Rob.

See my (edited) earlier reply re oil usage.

Put it this way..

In 7 months, 5000+miles and several good runs out, i haven't needed to top the oil up at all yet ;)
