Octavia 3 driving modes

Featured Replies

my VRS retains the driving mode. No defaulting to normal on mine. I have a manual.

Yes, mine has a light on showing is has a mode other than "normal" selected, and that light always comes on when I start up,

unlike the "cancel stop/start" light which has to be activated each time I switch on.

Update: Well, after my experiences with Eco Mode, I decided to try Sport for a bit. It's never been out of sport since! The throttle response and the steering are so much better that it feels like a completely different car. And the economy is better too, although this might well be down to having now covered 6000 miles from new. Still loving it. A 350 mile round trip to the North East and back in a day with a wedding gig in the middle was the first proper long distance test for the car and it acquitted itself faultlessly and averaged over 50mpg. I got out at the end pretty much as if I had just driven 20 miles. I find the seats and the driving position excellent too.

Actually, I think I might be in love!

My car is in sports mode all the time but the DSG selector in the MFD always shows D1 D2 etc. unless I pull back on the selector to activate S1 S2 etc.

This is never saved after engine is switched off but it is easy to just flick the selector past the drive position before pulling away.

Isn't it the case that only Eco mode has the coasting feature in the DSG models? Surely that also gives some reasonable level of economy gain.

On that front I'm amazed on a flat road how long the car retains a decent speed when it goes into this coasting mode.

You would think, but it only coasts when you are not using the cruise control, so if you are like me and spend most of your time on motorways it useless!

Only been driving my Octavia Automatic for a few weeks but I think I may have a problem with the driving mode. Firstly I’ve never pressed the driving mode button - not once. After having the car a week I noticed that the revs were going very high before the gear changed. I thought I was perhaps paying too much attention and the car had always been like this. The car hardly ever got to sixth gear except when doing about 80 mph.

Today I started out on a long journey and noticed the revs were now much lower before changing gear and the revs could go much lower without the car changing down. I was in 6th gear doing 60 mph which is more what I would expect. the driving mode shows as normal.

is there something wrong with the car? The only change I ever make to the driving is to switch stop start off. Any comments/suggestions welcome

Maybe try experimenting with the vrs button and see which mode suits you best???

Think there may be something wrong with you for not actually pressing every button! Lol

You have probably changed the mode by pulling the gear lever back to change into S mode. It shows you on the dashboard display whether you are in D or S. S is very sporty and keeps the gear selected right up to red line if you keep your foot down.

It's a sad day when someone buys a VRS and doesn't push the VRS button....... :speechless:

Exactly this. It's a fairly common query on here, and it's usually the case.

Wonder if it explains it in the manual? :mmm:

Thanks for all the responses. Have now found this in another thread and I’m convinced that I’m pulling the gear stick down and activating sports mode. RTFM I suppose !

I really like the "Coasting" feature of ECO mode on the 7 speed DSG of my 1.4TSi Octavia. It annoys me that it's not available from D mode because ECO blunts the throttle response.

I wonder if it would be possible via some hack of the car electronics to make Coasting available in D? That is, have crisp decent throttle response and Coasting. The car feels like a smooth magic carpet when in ECO, because Coasting makes it feel more like an old slusho-matic torque convertor auto box but without the massive inefficiency and fuel consumption of an old auto box.

Yeah I must admit the superb courtesy car I had did that and it took me by surprise at first. Made it a lovely smooth relaxing drive though. A brilliant feature

On the FL cars they coast in all modes, can’t do the clutch packs any long term favours though. I hate that you can’t specify a different mode for the engine and the box on the DSG, as I’d be happy for the Eco setting on the engine, but not the box as I didn’t get on with the coast function really and as a lot of my miles are motorway it seemed futile to leave it on now I’ve turned the soundaktor volume down. In Sport mode you can re engage the Drive setting in the box, but I’m not sure if that  keeps the engine in Sport?

Naw, coast only comes in Eco Mode on the FL cars & is disabled over 80 mph

Must just be a 1.5 TSi thing then?

Good thing it’s not on the vRS unless it can be turned off IMO.

When I had my Passat you could turn "Coast" on or off separately through the MFD.

Obviously can't do that with the Octavia.

I also had a 1 Series BMW with the ZF8HP box. They added coast feature to that box too around 2014/2015 so even conventional torque converter autos are doing it now.

AFAIK, coasting isn't as economical as keeping the car in gear unless you're looking at gliding on a flat road for long distances.

Coasting will allow for the car to travel essentially in neutral mode for as long as you'd like but I gather would have to still burn a small amount of fuel to keep the engine running. On normal D mode, the gear the car is in will stay engaged when there is no throttle, which ultimately slows the car down slightly but fuel consumption goes to zero. I've found this useful in more stop/go traffic, roundabouts, etc because I can then gear down to use the engine to slow the car down further.

Whether in the long run there is a difference between E and D modes in terms of fuel consumption, be it long or short distances, is debatable (and therefore likely insignificant). There was a reasonably good summary another member gave on the differences between the modes, with E very slightly having the edge on D mode, but both greatly improved over S mode.

Whatever you do with the buttons at  the end of the day it's all about that right foot and how much you plant it for fuel economy or lack of. Stick the fuel consumption on the display and see how low you can get by having some fun. I got mine down to 6 mpg last time I was being exuberant. Life is too short to play driving miss daisy all day. :)

That is all well and good until someone dies as a consequence of just having some 'fun' on public roads.

Maybe just save it for the track.

WTF? So the FL models with DSG coast even in M-mode?

mine certainly doesnt, only in eco, not in normal or sport or M

The DSG car can't coast in M mode as it's always in gear.
