Limit speed based on road speed limit?

Featured Replies

As per the subject is there any way to limit the car speed to the road speed limit as shown in Amundsen SatNav?

Or do you know of any device that can be plugged into the car to do this?

Failing that any advise on the best GPS Speed Camera alert device that alerts you whenever you go over the speed limit for the current road?

I'm fully aware that the best speed limiter is my foot and the road signs on the road, but at the moment that doesn't seem to be working well! :-)  The ACC does help a lot but looking for the best additional options to assist me.

Thanks

I think this would be a good idea if lending the car to someone else, maybe a son / daughter.

Luckily I have 16 years before I have to think about that, in the meantime I can ponder - would I give my TSI vRS to my 17 year old son.......... :-)

I tend to find that when I want it to my right foot works perfectly

I've thought about this for some time and I still think that it's a dangerous thing. Imagine when you got a situation when you have to accelerate hard (some overtaking or whatever) and you suddenly feel that your car won't accelerate just because of that limit thing... and you crash into somebody.

Trucks and buses have such limiters but they aren't the best overtakers so they anyway have to think twice before such action.

Use cruise control more for longer sections with speed limits.

I've driven a few cars with speed limiters (iirc mondeo's) and the limit can be 'pushed through' a bit like kick down on an auto box but it hardens the accelerator pedal at the set limit, so shouldn't be a safety concern - worked quite well if i recall.

Use the winter tyres max speed warning function, it's easy to set. You then get an audible reminder if you go too fast

Maybe as one form of warning set the 'Winter Tyres fitted Warning' on the car at 70 MPH,

and then the 'Speed Limit Warning' @ 75 MPH.

Or at what even speeds suits you.

Nice simple reminders that then sound whoever is driving.

One option if you travel on roads with constantly changing speed limits is something along the lines of Sygic Speed Camera Alert.

You can set it to alert you at 0mph above the respective speed limit. It is also pretty accurate with fixed speed camera positions.

Sygic also do a pretty nifty satnav (they use Tomtom mapping), I tend to use this more than the SCA app as it offers automatic rerouting due to traffic. Handy whilst the M74 is being ripped apart.

A word of caution, never totally rely on these apps to be accurate with speed limits. The Sygic satnav app still says the M74 is 70mph, whilst the 50mph Average Speed Cameras say otherwise!

*other SCA and satnav apps are available. ;)

Can only be set for one speed, this is not what the OP wants

We probably all read what the OP wants but are making other suggestions until someone comes up with what he wants. Systems that are watching 'speed restrictions and variations due to temporary circumstances are rare'. Not much beATS drivers paying attention and trying to avoid the loss of their licence or worse.

This feature is available on the Honda HRV.

The first part of this feature in the generic speed limiter function. This was on my last two cars.

Instead of setting cruise control you could select speed limit and the car would only prevent you going above this.

You can always override by flooring the pedal to avoid safety issues.

The second step, that's now in the Honda HRV, is to adjust the setting for this speed limit automatically based on the camera.Sat Nav data.

Funnily the Octavia has the more advanced feature (Sign Recognition/Sat Nav) to do this, but the cruise control lacks the first point of a generic speed limiter function (my 2011 Leon had this??)

I drive corsa pool cars for my job, some of them are corsa vans. The vans are limited, the older models are done by restricting the revs and ones that have appeared in the last year and the brand new ones are done by speed. Believe you don't want your car restricted, it's so dangerous it's scary.

TomTom Satnavs have this as a standard setting.
