Getting rid of SKY

Featured Replies

I did leave SKY 18 months back for TalkTalk Youview.

It was so crap SWMBO threatened divorce for unreasonable behaviour.

So we went back to SKY at half price by changing the name on the account to hers and changing the house number from 8 to 08 - BINGO!! - Full new customer discounts.

I believe other Youview options are better than talktalk, but their bargain basement Huawei hardware is to be avoided like the plague.

It does amaze me how much people spend every month on TV packages. Mate in work cancelled his Sky this week was paying around £60 a month!! but took him ages to cancel as they immediately offered to

  • You can pay sky £10 to keep access to them & turn the box into a freesat

Gizmo68, if and when you cancel, remove your viewing card asap, if it is not in the machine it cannot be switched off, but it would be only a matter of time before a pulse gets you, I was told this by Sky Customer Service. Ever considered KODI

To my knowledge the encryption key on the viewing card is only valid for a certain period of time. Once it expires the recordings cannot be accessed because the decryption is missing/expired.

Years ago you could avoid the kill signal, but this stopped being the case with the newer & HD boxes AFAIA

When we had analogue sky yrs back and cancelled, me father discovered that putting the card in the freezer for 24hrs and rubbing it on a cotton vest got it going again for about 14days at a time :D

Agreed, but they would both have been 2TB irrespective of the drive type.

Looks like that decision is now accademic though, as I have found out Sony TV’s will not record from YouView, so it’s back to plan A: get a 2TB Freesat box, which is no hardship really as you get more channels anyway.

We've almost stopped recording stuff and  watch most things on catch up (Using a Now TV box)  - I thought youview offered this as well.

Incidently we have a Humax Foxsat box - modded so that you can play recorded content (even HD) anywhere in the house on a DLNA device. ( In fact the programmes are copied to NAS)

I haven't had any TV other than free sat since I came back to the UK in 2007. Spent it all on cars instead ;)

Its madness.

I know a girl thats jobless, 2 kids and struggles to feed them, but spends £80 a month on sky!

Quite alot of people are cancelling now it seems. Its just stupid money isnt it.

Oh yeah, dole queue special - no income beyond dole (188/wk), kids barely eat, never have stuff for school, but mum n dad have a sky dish on the wall, ALL the channel packs, never run out of cigarettes and are out drinkin 4nights a week. The other 3 are at home drinking..

Thats the one!

Claim poverty but always got a 60" flat screen tv!

Annoying really :D.

Well I'm sure this fun will come up soon, because I'm currently paying £11 a month and have no intention of paying £40 for TV.

There's plenty enough on terrestrial and frankly if you want the sky box sets Now TV is actually better.

Going OT, it really does wind me up when people make judgements about other people's lifestyles. If you'd looked in my lounge window this time last year, you'd see a 40" led tv, Sky, and two newish cars on the drive, while I was on benefits (esa) and unable to work.

The reality was that I bought all those things, without credit, before I got cancer. Still, it's easier to judge than it is to understand, isn't it?

Back OT, I pay an eye watering amount for Sky every month, but then I've got four boxes on multi room. I've had freebies before, and my mother in law has it at her house. Sky offers much more in terms of choice than Freeview and the features are much better. I wouldn't be without it. Although I'm waiting for my youngest to grow out of the Disney etc channels, so I can cancel that package.

To give them their due, I called Sky last week to organise a home move and they are installing the dish and 4x cabling all for free as I've been with them so long. They offered it without me asking.

  • 3 weeks later...

I have sky, all the channels through satellite ,harldy ever watch it apart from the football but all i pay is 70 euro..............

A YEAR!!!!! :D  :D  :D  :D  :D

and have been for 5 yrs.

CHEAP AS CHIPS

Yes but that's on top of the 160 Euros for your. TV licence as well. The UK Licence fee is £145 a year -- and that's my point -- why should I pay for both a service to provide channels to watch, PLUS a fee to allows me to watch even the so-called free channels? Sorry, but £145 is already more than enough to pay for what is provided, without lining the pockets of the likes of Sky.

Mike

is that not now a media licence? or what i will be . i get what your saying but id never pay 70 a month not a hope and the licence money here goes to the rte even though they get paid for advertisments its a con and a joke

Frankly we pay the monthy fee to access two or maybe three chanels, that's it.

So at £11 it's not great value, but not too bad.

At £40, they can go and do one.

I think sky need to reduce their prices across the boad now, as they're just too expensive.

If this means the sports ****ing war reduces so be it.

If it means the sports channels cost a lot more, so that a package with sports is the same price so be it.

But the £20 down to £10 super special starter price is frankly way to high.

Plus when you renew, they should be able to offer you the same again, as you don't have to have a new box or an install etc.

I've only seen one mention of "Kodi". If you haven't come across it yet, get on the case asap and you can have the whole world of television for £0.

Not legal though right?

That's the difference between some people and the other.

Even at full price, with the line of work I am in, it wouldn't be worth it to get done

I have Kodi on a firestick and while its 'free' its not the most reliable way of watching TV and films. Some days are better than others but its damn annoying when your film cuts out half way through.

I have just done some investigating around ditching Virgin tv, just keeping internet as it has been really good for me .

Was going to get a BT TV you view + box and use freeview side as with this box you can record,  my tv has the pay per view options that you can get on amazon, and virtually every new tv now, and i am sure there will be a way to record from the pay per view services on tv  to the Youview box. I was able to rig up an original Sky box to a video recorder when sky 1st came out and you could not record.

As luck would have it i have managed to keep my current TV package and get the Virgin up to 200mb internet for £18 pm less. Just waiting for the Ultra high speed router to arrive,

We have Netflix and anything I wish to keep I plug in and save to my Panasonic EX83 recorder, from our Samsung Smart blu-ray player, as without warning Netflix will drop a certain film.

As the end user we are doing nothing illegal. Somewhere along the line though codes are being

obtained that may not be strictly kosher. It's been going on in one form or another as long as Sky has been in existence, even if it was illegal for the end user it would be impossible to police.

IP address would give you away.

IP address would give you away.

Not quite sure how that would work logistically. It would take an army surely to monitor and recognise exactly whether I was watching a terrestrial channel like ITV or maybe Iplayer or a YouTube video.

But as I said its not an illegal act anyway so it's of little consequence. All I know is I'm a lot better off each month not feathering the pockets of the Murdoch empire.

If the content providers know the IP address being accessed they could get a court order to identify anyone accessing it. It how file sharers are caught.

Yes you can use a proxy, but unless it's via a VPN your ISP knows where you are going before you hit the proxy.

If it becomes illegal I'll go down the VPN route or just listen to the radio.

And there's a question -- if I only used the computer to access TV programs, would I need a TV licence to do this?

Yes.
