slamming the boot (hatchback) lid

Featured Replies

Hi this is a minor point but is it normal to have to slam (gently) the boot lid to close it properly. I cannot get it to close just by pressing on it?  (New Octavia Hatchback)   Thanks as always. K

Yes, they aren't self closing (like the MkII Superb).

I have to give mine a gentle help otherwise it just latches but nothing overly heavy.
Unlike Mrs Mnky, who treats it like one of those "Test Your Strength" things at the fairground. Honestly, one day the rear screen will end up in the boot.

It's quite an effort - good job it's got the rubber pulling handle, or whatever it is, hanging down.

I too found it difficult to close, & the shouts from SWMBO inside the car when I "gently" slammed the boot shut could be heard for miles ! After almost 3 years of thoroughly enjoyable "ownership" (courtesy of PCP !), I've got the hang of closing it now, but still need to check it's fully closed before getting inside (to the drivers seat !!).

It's fairly heavy to start with, but always harder to close when the weather's warm because (I presume) the gas inside the struts expands with the heat, creating greater pressure to work against.

I think also a large contributing factor to the high closing efforts are the pressure equilisation problems with the Octavia.

If you sit Inside the car while someone closes the boot it feels like The Rock just slammed it shut.

This also contributes to the old issue with the fuel filler cap opening when you close the boot & the "booming" noise it the cabin in another thread.

I found the boot lid on my Superb estate  was not the smoothest tbh, whereas this new vRS Octy one close so much smoother easier and with a more resounding clunk than thump.

Weird in'it?

Thanks all. The reason I ask is that the rear number plate vibrates when I 'slam' the boot lid. It's not alarming, but sounds 'tinny'   K

Tighten the screws? That should eliminate rattling.

My dealer used aluminium number plates. Tightening the screws doesn't make much difference. A couple of rubber washers behind the plates might have helped but fitted plastic plates when my own registration was transferred which solved the problem.
