Brake disc size help 170bhp estate

Featured Replies

Hi all, so I need to change my discs and pads for my 2012 estate elegance, the front disc is definitely 312mm but the back ones are so rusty I'm finding it hard to measure accurately. Are they 282mm or 286mm?

Here's the braking page from the Skoda parts catalogue: http://etka.cc/skoda/parts_lst/markt/CZ/modell/SUP/year/2012/hg/6/catalog/sk/drive_standart/632/lang/e

The rear brakes _should_ be PR-1KJ for a 170 (they are on mine anyway). 1KJ rear brakes are 286 mm diameter.

Just tried your link to find the correct front disc size on my CFFB (CR140) Superb, but it doesn't like my VIN (TMBBE73T1B9031734).

Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?

Given the not quite legitimate nature of these online catalogues, it's likely the VIN lookup is broken.

You'll need to know the PR code for your brakes. Easiest way to get it is buy an hour's access to Erwin and download the build list from there. You're looking for the 'Vehicle Specific Information'.

I just nipped outside with a U-shaped piece of cardboard cut to 312mm. Worked a treat :D

There's no kind of atmosphere?

Just getting soft in my old age!

Took a quick look at the build sticker, the rear brakes PR code is listed (1KJ), but strangely the next line down i.e. the front brakes, are missing. A common situation apparently...

Hmm, now for the pads.

I really could do with the PR code.

They all have the integrated wear sensor too.

I think you're looking at 1ZA.

This page offers two different part numbers for the caliper carrier, one up to date 24/05/2009  and a different part number from 25/05/2009 onwards. The latter only states for PR number 1ZA. As your car is in this age bracket, I think it must be 1ZA.

Nice job Wino, I'd narrowed it down to 1LJ or 1ZA.

1ZA it is!

Just rang up a local motor factors, two brand choices, cheap: Drivetec, premium: Apec. Got prices for the Apec's...

Discs:

£41.72 + VAT (£50.06 inc. VAT) x2 = £100.12

Pads:

£25.69 + VAT (£30.83 inc. VAT) = £30.83

Total: £130.95 inc. VAT.

Compared to £102.48 from Brembo's from eurocarparts as shown above.

To go for the Brembo's is the obvious choice, right?

Just rang Skoda (DM Keith in York), £194.49 inc. VAT.

To have my local dealer do a change of front discs and pads costs £214 incl parts, labour, wash/vac, loaner car and VAT. That €236.50 in our money.

A little too much uncertainty for my liking on the parts, especially if getting them delivered. I realised that there is a eurocarparts in York, so took a drive over this morning.

Good, job, I'd selected the wrong pads.

£99 for a pair of Brembo discs and pads. A stint crawling around the car is now in order, just as the weather turns :D

Got them fitted last weekend. Dead easy, although the 21mm bolts holding on the caliper carrier are tight, really tight. An air or battery powered impact wrench is definitely advisable. A piston rewind tool too.

Looking at the old discs and pads, loads of life left in them, a shame really. The wobble through the steering wheel under braking has gone though so I can only assume the discs were warped slightly...

You will certainly be set for the winter with your new brake and tyre set up, looking good!

Looks like pad deposits on the discs causing the judder rather than warped discs as you can see the specs of material on the disc, but that's a really good price for high carbon brembo discs and pads.

Interesting observation, I'd not really noticed the dark spotting on the discs until now.

Would this be a sign of something wrong with the discs or pads, or some other external influence?

To be honest the feeling through the steering has been there since within a few months of the discs being fitted, I should have taken them back but never got round to it. The fact it was only noticeable under heavy braking meant it was never much of a bother. It was only recently (2+ years / 50,000 ish miles) that the problem got worse.

Probably combination of poor bedding of the pads when first fitted and may be poor quality brake discs.
