Sorry what heats up quick, the Engine Coolant or the interior, or both and what about the Engine Oil, how many miles before it gets to an indicated 50*oC or even 80-90*oC if the ambient temp is around freezing.

?

What VW have you just got?

Everything seems to heat up very quickly, but only when it's fairly cold, hence I'm trying to find out exactly what triggers it. If the outside temperature is around 10 degrees C the supplementary heater doesn't seem to kick in, if it's 5 degrees or less it seems to heat everything up very quickly, but as I said I'm not quite sure exactly what parameters it works around, I'm just giving you a rough idea of when it seems to work.

  • Interesting little experiment, I'm not a 280 owner and one of the reasons is fuel consumption, but to be honest 23mpg is less than I imagined, especially if as you say you were driving as carefully as

  • Interestingly this is slightly better than my 1.8Tsi Scout that was doing around 22. Like I said it's not really a fair test. All week. Cold start. Stop start traffic and all hills for 3 miles. No run

  • 23mpg in any mode strikes me as p---poor. I'm getting similar figures to eurotraveller and seriously struggle to get it below 25 mpg when I'm giving it loud (which is every occasion circumstances perm

Sorry, none the wiser.

What VW do you have, and how many minutes until there is heat in the car if the Ambient Temp is 2*oC say and the A/C is disabled?

Which country are you in.

Which country are you in.

1. VW Tiguan 2018 MY (as can be seen from the infotainment system picture - just the two knobs)

2. Maybe 1-2 minutes from start until heat begins to enter the cabin, shortly after this the water temp gauge begins to move (haven't checked the oil temp).

3. The A/C is never disabled, the supplementary heater is part of the A/C system - see my earlier picture, it's under the air con settings.

4. I'm in the UK.

Note: VW carefully differentiate the Webasto type heater by calling it an auxiliary heater, what I have VW call a supplementary heater.

VW are only careful in that they make sure that they fail to translate Owners Manuals very well, be that to English / US English, Spanish or Czech, or make explanations IME or reading them. No idea how they do with Chinese.

After doing a search the supplementary heater has been mentioned here before

What engine has your Tiguan?

Doesn’t seem to. The water gauge gets to the middle reasonably quickly but when it does, the oil is still reading - - - ie less than 50. It takes a lot longer for the oil to get up to its normal temperature of 95 - 105.

Interesting......

Our older cars take app. 3 miles (cruising at 50 mph 'ish) before the temperature display shows 50C, but the R will get to 50C in app 1-1.5 miles.

It's always much hotter under the bonnet than the others, (bigger turbo?) & since it's basically the same engine as the 280 I thought that it might

be the same with your Superbs. Perhaps the much bigger engine bay doesn't retain as much heat?

As for reaching 95 / 105 C, possibly not at all in winter if cruising at normal speeds without any stop-start driving.

(I have a regular 19 mile journey with less than 2 miles of 30 mph limits, about 2 miles of 40 & 50, the rest at NSL, good for economy but.....)

The 280 horse  is bloody thirsty, I've been driving it in eco mode since I've bought it but the fuel consumption isn't that great, I'm going to try it in normal mode ,than sport than individual see what difference does it makes

As I said in my other thread I’ve had 40+mpg out of mine. It just takes practice and technique.

I used it just out of curiosity but I have to ask if you wanted decent fuel economy why did you buy a car with this engine ?

At that time I needed for work but  the fuel consumption was described as 39mpg....

Thank you

If you do a lot of longer trips using A roads and  motorways, then 38-40 Mpg is fairly easy sticking with the other traffic. Eco will change up to 7th on A roads at 40-50 when otherwise it would hang on to 5th or 6th. Around Scotland’s clearer roads so got 42-43 with no real effort, 50-60 Mph. Otherwise short 10 mile commutes on A roads in the summer gives me 35-38 and I don’t bother looking in the winter!

Thank you for your imput 🙂

I’ve driven just over 1000 miles in the last 12 days, mostly long drives in ECO and I’m only averaging 32mpg (29.8 very long term) and I’d like to think I’m an economical driver.

I guess having the 7 speed DSG helps but I’d take any tips Redboy on how to improve the numbers. I was getting around 37/8 average on the M6 on the way up cruising around 70 all the way, which I was very happy with tbh.

40+ For me was mostly motorway going on hols interesting experiment but as i've said eco mode's not for me.

Yeah, I find the slight sluggishness an annoyance, especially when trying to overtake but the 3/4 mpg improvement is worth it on a long run, although obviously, we never bought the car for economic reasons….

I'm a bit confused.

What do you expect from the car?

2 litre petrol with a decent tune?

Official combined is 40mpg, but everyone knows those figures are wildly overestimated.

Would suggest a Stage 1 tune as a possible solution as it narrows the fuel delivery to decent fuel type, can help.

Personally, I get just over 31mpg, which I am more than happy with, will happily get less when I want to.

I’ve found eco mode to be a false economy on my work commute.

28 miles mostly motorway and the best I’ve ever managed in eco is about 35mpg. In normal drive I’ve done 38mpg same journey!

Exactly, all depends on your own circumstances

@Roberto280 yes don’t get me wrong I usually only get around 32mpg these days as that was set when there was a long section of 50mph limit with average cameras so now thats gone I’m doing 75 on the clock mostly (maniac I know before the holier than thou brigade appear :notme:) so that’s obviously using a bit more fuel but most of my economy on that journey comes from the 12 minutes i takes to get to the motorway junction and I can easily get 30mpg by then in any of the modes if I’m careful with the loud pedal anyway so once up to speed eco isn’t really going to work then anyway
