SIII Bolero + GPS

Featured Replies

Hello guys!

Has anyone come out with a good idea to get a stand-alone GPS solution into your car?

Upon ordering the SIII I thought that the Apple CarPlay / Android Auto solution would be OK for me.

As it turns out, it was not the best idea, cause in Europe the solution still has many problems.

I.e not available offline, carrier charges abroad and so on.

Estonian Skoda prices the exchange of Bolero to Columbus roughly up to 10% of the cars prize in total.

So it is no way a solution for me.

At the moment I am not looking for B part into the car, meaning that a symbiosis of Bolero and a B part would be the best solution.

Can you guys brief me on the options available.

Thanks in return!

Indrek.

hi!

Thanks for all the reply´s.
I will need to look into that Kenwood addition, seems to be the solution that i´m looking for.

Sygic app would be great, if you could only mirror it to your car´s radio with iphone.

Unfortunately , you can not.

Hello!

All in all the current situation with the navigation add-on is quite harsh, when it comes to newer cars (Skoda included).

The logic behind the car building these days is that the one you order is the one you get (for the time). The case here is that factory does not support any additional add-ons and if you really want to get them you will pay a lot.

I.e SIII Bolero upgrade to Columbus would be around 3500 EUR, and factory wont quarantee that CAN-network of Bolero car will even support it. Cause they haven´t tryed it (atleast the Estonian dealership hasen´t).

There are good solutions for add-ons aswell (non factory). The best example would be the http://www.axionag.de/products/axion/nik-vwz01-vw-golf-7-navigations-nachruestsatz_en.

This aswell costs a lot of money, the module without the installation is around 900 EUR.

Alternative is the CarPlay/Android Auto solutions, which I found are pretty good, but still not good enough. Rumor has it, that ios 10 will bring wireless carplay solution to the table. Researching diffrent apps there is negative thing that comes around with most of them.
The fact that Apple is Apple. Meaning that it is extremely hard for any 3rd party developer to get to their eco-system. Lets hope that when time passes by, that one offline navigation tool will make it there.

All in All , CarPlay is really good (my opinion), Android auto is OK, but not good enough. The only advantage being , that it has more apps available.
The only two really important things that are missing at the moment, are wireless connection + offline navigation. Other things (needed for a enjoyable drive) are present.

So, lets hope that both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay make it easy for developers to develop different things for us to enjoy.

I certanly am ready for the time, that my phone controls the infotainment of my car aswell. :)

Cheers.

I wonder if the easiest thing would be to buy a cheap-ish decent android phone and use it as a dedicated car gps via android auto and be done with it.

Might just do that it apple maps sucks too badly.

The thing with the cheapish Android phone is that you really do not want it cheap.

Meaning that the older the phone the slower the whole thing.

That means that you will get it to work, but you do not want it to work slow.

All in all, no good solution at the moment.

I did the calculation and the cheapest option was somewhere around 450 EUR (for a new phone).

But , Vaim , if you go for the solution you described then write here , how the performance will be and if You are satisfied with it.

Yeah, i'll have to see. I'll update when i do.

By "cheap-ish" i mean somewhere around 400€ yeah. Androids have come a long way and 400€ buys a very good chinese xiaomi etc phone. Compared to 1k€+ options for different headunits etc i don't think it's a bad deal.

Don't even have to buy it new - it could easily have a smashed display to get a crazy good deal, since you'd never use it.

Oneplus phones are maybe worth a look. Android with no bloatware, great spec and low cost relative to spec. I've had a oneplus one for over 2 years now and it's been great.
