Front assist

Featured Replies

Not sure if the front assist is working, it's switched on! I thought you got a warning if close to another car etc. I haven't got anything yet, even though I had a little try...nothing dangerous though!

I thought the same thing. I wouldn't drive too close just to see if you get the 'too close' sign on the dash, if you are a decent driver you will know how far back to sit from the car in front. Secondly when it does alert, usually it will be for traffic turning as you approach it. However all that 'negativity' aside, it did save me last winter as I crested the brow of a hill and the X5 in front stamped on the brakes to avoid an unexpected and (unseen by me) queue. I revised my previous thoughts that it was not a very useful or priority option. In fact it is meant to be unobtrusive in day to day driving and if it alerts constantly, you are either unlucky or simply an atrocious driver with no road sense.

Thankyou, I was just curious to see how it worked and now I know. I just like to try things, maybe I could drive at a bouncy castle to see it working!

Could you make a video of it :D

I recently had a van suddenly brake and turn left in front of me without warning, and believe me it does kick in at the right moment.

It scared the life out of me with audio visual stuff then sharp abs braking.

I'm fairly sure I would have wrecked the front of the car without it.

I wasn't sure about mine, I would always brake before it kicked in. Then the other day I happened to be following another Fabia when it slammed on the brakes to turn off. I'm thinking why on earth is my car beeping at me, and it was the front assist warning.

My wife managed ( unintentionally )  to test this the first time she drove it Lol .

It's triggered a beep and the car symbol filling the Maxi-Dot twice for me and I've only had it a week! Both times when people have cut me up and slammed on their brakes. The standard of driving in Manchester is, erm, not the best.

Both times I was already moving my foot from the accelerator to the brake pedal, so it reacts as I do which is good. It's definitely a good thing to have.

I thought I would always break before it kicked in but not on the occasion described above. Glad I have it now.

Mine cut in the other day while moving off from a green traffic light their was no obvious reason possibly the last car from my right had crossed and maybe the raider caught the tail end of the vehicle as I pulled away me and the lorry behind me got a hell of a fright. Had a near miss a few months ago after very heavy rain the vehicle in front of me breaked suddenly due to the road ahead been flooded so it really works. Joe

Mine flashed a warning today, where the total mileage is...just two car images with an exclamation mark in between. You really don't notice it, no audible warning but yes it works! That's it, my curiosity is satisfied :-)

I'll try to avoid that, thanks ;-)

No matter how good a driver we think we are it will probably happen one day and will most likely be another driver making a dangerous manoeuvre that activates it.

I think it's great technology and will save lives.

Do you have front assist or front assist with emergency city brake?

I believe the Fabia only has the former which probably explains why you drove into someone.

You are correct, don't get me wrong it was my fault for not concentrating properly and we shouldn't rely on it but it was sold to my at purchase as a system that avoids low and high speed collisions and even the handbbook says :

''Emergency braking at low speed In a driving speed range of about 5 km/h to about 30 km/h the automatic braking action is not preceded by a warning. With an immediate impact hazard automatic braking is done with the breaking force increasing in stages''

and i could of really done with it doing so.

Same thing. It will brake for you, but not in every scenario.

Front assist

Using a radar in the front bumper, front assist initiates an audio/visual warning, using MaxiDOT, to warn about an impending collision. If the driver fails to respond, the system is designed to initiate braking to minimise any possible impact.

From the Fabia Brochure

Also- it's shown braking in the EuroNCAP testing video.

Is Front Assist velocity or rpm related?

I ask because my daughter drove her car into the wall of her garage and borrowed the Fabia 3.

As she prepared to leave, the Fabia was parked some few inches from her garage door, she had missed reverse and was in 1st. Being her, she accelerated and the brakes came-on, the 'scream' scaring her, the Fabia did not move, but she never looked at the maxidot.

She took it out of gear and walked round the car wondering.

Getting back in she realised she hadn't pushed the gear lever down to select reverse.

Similarly, while checking why the engine light had come on with VCDS the maxidot displayed 'Front Assist not available,' even though it was 'ticked.'

I thought it was due to being in the garage so I repeated down the drive and the same thing.

I read somewhere that VW disable FA if it operated too many times and has to be re-enabled (with VAS/VCDS) not via the buttons on the wheel.

Is this correct?

As your daughter had driven her own car into the garage wall - no, it was not correct to lend her your Fabia. :giggle:

Some of the VCDS guys can answer the VCDS question - but Carista diagnostics throws a  "Front Assist not available" message when it's doing the scan. But then Front Assist is available after the scan. If you look for the menu option, or press the F.A. button on the steering wheel, you'll see the FA Enabled box is ticked again.

Does your VCDS documentation mention that it throws error messages during scan?

No but from what you say about Carista it seems logical that it disables FA but I can only check after the scan and it's enabled. I'll have to get wifey to hold-out a towel on a broomstick and test it.
