Anyone had a letter yet to book their car in for the software update?

Featured Replies

The top end is great on the 2.0 CR engines, my superb is great on the motorway, but for around town I think my old PD 130 Passat pulled better at lower speeds

Some of that is almost certainly torque limiting in the map to take pressure off the transmission, especially in the lower gears. But the 8 valve PDs were that bit more torquey at low revs - in general 8 valve engines work better at low revs while 16 valve engines work better higher up the rev range.

Hi!

I drive a Superb with a CFGB engine (2.0TDi CR 170hp) with a little over 200.000kms.

It's going to get serviced next week and I saw in the quote they sent me, that it is going to have the sofware fixed.

I ask them if I should be worried and they said they've been doing that to other 170hp engines without any compliaints...

Should I be worried..?

No.

Got my letter today for the Fix/update, still not sure as what to do for the best.

But reading some posts in this thread all seems ok

Am I the only worried one ???

Arrived this morning....

Has anyone had a letter yet for a 1.6 diesel with the EA189 engine ?

I have not seen one apart from the usual letter offering platitudes a few months ago.

No sign of a letter at my place.

I actually do not expect one until 2017.

We just purchased a 2015 TDI 170hk and while the vendor (official Skoda reseller here in Sweden) told me our car is due for a Software Update in regards to "Dieselgate", it wouldn't be performed until later and "Will not affect me or the car in any discernible way", which I have in writing.

As this is my first Skoda (or VAG car whatsoever), it'll be interesting to see how this pans out.

It'll be interesting to say the least

I received the letter the other day. I have booked my car in for a service with local dealer who hasn;t mentioned anything,

Do you think they would do it without authorization I hope not.

Stubs

I left the Superb at the dealer this morning for the 210.000kms service but asked not to change the software.

They said they couldn't do it. All cars MUST be fixed if they go to a Skoda dealer, otherwise they'll get severe penalties by the manufacturer for not doing the fix.

Plus they said that all owners are being called to do the fix within a certain period of time. If they miss the fix, Skoda importer will send the information to the national vehicle registration (IMT here in Portugal), and their cars will not pass the anual inspection (same as MOT in UK or TUV in Germany) and will get the registration cancelled.

The guy also told me that the problem was NOX and not CO2 emissions, so the performance and consumption will not be affected. He mentioned that they have to lower the exhaust gas temperature slightly to be within the tolerances of NOX emissions, so I shouldn't feel any difference.

So, I agreed with the fix, got my fingers crossed and left in a 2016 Skoda Octavia Break 1.6TDI. This car is a courtesy car for the software fix, they said...

By the way, what a shock coming from a Superb 2.0 170hp engine to the 1.6!! It amazes me how can anybody put up with this engine in a Superb! It's not the lack of power that is the problem but the lack of smoothness, the hole in torque below 2000rpm and the way it depends on boost to make any real progress!!

I should pick the car tomorow so I'll have some opinion then...

?

Did you get that all in writing and a signature from the person that told you that?

Portugal is in the EU is it not and what you were told sounds as though it has arms and legs added to it by the teller.

Does the Vehicle test in Portugal check NoX?

Well, thanks for your concern, but I like my 1.6

Didn't get anything in writing, but let's hope for the best...

I believe here in Portugal NoX emissions are not tested yet. There are lots of people with FAPs removed and they dont have any troubles at the anual inspection!

After a day driving the 1.6, I got used to it. You just have to drive it in a different way! Problem is fuel consumption is a little higher than with the 2.0!

Here in Portugal. in 10 Superbs, 9 are 1.6 and only 1 is 2.0! So it shouldnt be as bad as my statement could led to believe!

Different countries have different requirements for allowing vehicles to be used on the road. Some countries are very strict on the type approval for the vehicle being intact before it can be registered or used. Since the emissions cheat violates the type approval requirements the cars must be updated in those countries before they can continue to be used. Portugal may be one such country.

The UK and Ireland are so far taking a more relaxed attitude to this, which is why owners in these countries are being offered an opt out. The distributor is still maintaining a list of those owners who opt out though.

Portugal may well be one of those countries, and if it is there will be written information on this and Consent Forms & clearly set out arrangements between the Government Agency and the Volkswagen Group.

It will not be done on the say so of some Service Desk Employee or Service Manager or staff in a Main Dealership.

If a vehicle 'Must have the Compulsory 'Fix', then T&C's will need to be set out'.

The distributor has certain permissions to 'act on voluntary recall actions'  and in the UK have been given 'Registered Keeper' information from the DVLA / DVSA,

Yet there is no DVSA SAfety Recall.

Dealers need to be careful as how that information is used and not abused, and the UK Government have said no changes in VED and the VWG are covering the costs to HMRC.

NO 'Official' DVSA Recall in the UK, just VW Recall Actions,.

All VAG Ireland will say about the 1.6 is "we anticipate the 1.6-litre TDI engine measures will arrive in the third quarter of 2016."

Well, its the third quarter and there has not been a peep about it. I had a service today and the guys in my local dealer had nothing further from VAG or Skoda Ireland to add.

Suits me. I don't have to see them till next August for the next service. I sure as hell am going to make sure I'm not the first guinea pig to get flow rectified and possibly euthanized either...!

Well had mine done this week during the third variable service.

I've just pick the Superb from the dealer.

It's a 100km drive, mainly highways, and all seems fine! It drives more or less the same way it did before..

They put a stamp on the service book as this car has had the EA189 recall.

Had my 2011 superb done on 28/07, i feel the car is shocking, acceleration gone, mpg poor, dreadful turbo lag, cruising at 70 on motorway the throttle is almost at the floor and there is nothing when the throttle is floored, turned a superb car into one i really don't like. The Skoda dealer seems quite uninterested, they said i would have to pay for a full diagnostic check, I have refused to pay and the car is going back in on 30th, if they find nothing wrong I have take it up with Skoda UK but I have already contacted them and they tell me its up to the dealer. ADVICE !!! DONT GET IT DONE !! ITS RUINED MY CAR. I f it cant be remedied it will be sold.

I am going to hunt down more threads here--- but related to this issue was an article

7th paragraph states that some cars will have the injectors changed as well.

Mr Himmer said they were trying to come up with a solution for the diesel engines involved: 1.2, 1.6 and 2.0 litre diesels.

He said there was different software for each engine. “It is complicated,” he added, revealing that some engines will need a change of injectors as well as software.

I have had my first external service outside of warranty. 3 years or a billion km... or whichever comes first.

I am driving a 2012 superb with a miserable 65,000 km on it and the mechanic has just warned me the injectors need to be changed out.  I am trying to deal with skoda Ireland to see what fall back I have on this. I am officially out of warranty but curious if anyone here as part of this campaign has had their injectors changed out.

In Ireland - so far only 5 skoda 1.6 have been done in the last month at my local dealer.

Thanks.

The change of injectors on the 1.6 was discussed by VAG late last year and then changed.

From what I understand (and I'm more than happy to be corrected!) they though they might have to go to a Bosch injection system (as per the 2.0 EA189 engines) rather than the Continental one fitted to the 1.6. This would be necessary if the only possible fix was to reconfigure the injector spray pattern as they would be doing (and have done) on the 2.0 diesels. Instead, they spent money on super computer time to do do flow modelling and came up with the 1.6 "flow rectifier grid " solution instead.

Who has said they they have fixed 1.6 diesels in Ireland? The 1.6 fix hasn't been released to any dealers anywhere yet. VAG only just announced release of the software fix for 460,000 1.2 diesels in the last couple of days.

The Germany Federal Motor Transport Authority(KBA) approved the recall on the 1.2 diesels and have only said they will "soon make a decision on the other affected engine, the 1.6 TDI"

I didn't mean to mention it was 1.6 litres they had fixed. It was in the whole campaign so far. Possibly only starting here.

No problem - makes sense now!

I think you are probably right if its a case of only having done 5 cars in total - I across in Co. Clare and I haven't met anyone who has had it done - or even been asked to come in for it (and you could pave the roads here with VW's, Audi and Skodas).

FYI - I had my annual service two days ago - the dealer had no idea when the 1.6 would start.
