Best tyres recommendations?

Featured Replies

Hi I'm getting sick of these tyres (budget) I have on my car because of the road noise so was wondering if anyone on here have experienced the same dilemma and would appreciate any feedback.

Uniroyal RainSport 3 :)

Really surprised with the Barums (Bravuris 3hm) I put on mine.  They are not a top end tyre, but road noise, and especially longevity much improved over the previous Bridgestones.

Matador.

On my taxi I done 20k easy

Hankooks are good all roundera

Goodyear EfficientGrip. not too expensive & very quiet, decent grip too.

My original fit 205/55/16 Continental Contipremiumcontact 2e tyres have been great.

Now done 29k miles (32k miles less 3k when on winters fitted this year)  and still 6mm+  in the centre and 5k at the edge (worst tyre) . Also very quiet and seem good for economy (considering it's a petrol)

It's the road noise I really want to get rid of tbh...someone else told me about uniroyals too.

Recently popped a couple of Infinity Ecomax on the front through Asda Tyres. All I can say is they are outstanding; quiet (much, much quieter than the Vredesteins they replaced) and excellent both in the wet and dry. At 100 miles in I had to do an emergency stop from 60mph in greasy conditions on the M25 and there was zero drama.. At £50 a pop, it can't be anything other than an unreserved recommendation.

Uniroyal is also £50/corner but is mid-range not economy.

Michelin Cross Climates are very quiet. A  friend at work has had them fitted to his Golf and found them amazingly quiet

European tyres are expensive in New Zealand. I've found the Hankook S1 Noble2 (H452) to be very good on our Superb.

Plus one from me.

Hmmm, interesting. So when exactly does a £50 tyre qualify for a move from "economy" to the hallowed heights of "mid-range"?

I recall when Firestone in the 90's and more recently Hankook and Maxxis in the last five years were all considered to be utter ditchfinder jokes, that is until Ford/GM/Toyota/ et al started to fit them as OE, so now, well, "they must me alright then". Vehicle manufacturers are not bothered whether the worlds tyre snobs consider them to be "budget" but it is their choices that change attitudes. They bid the production runs to their contracted manufacturers and the cheapest bidder wins, it's that simple. Incidentally, my mistake, the fitted price was £45.30 and I couldn't give a tinkers cuss what label they're given; I read the user reviews and they got a great rating. Oh AFAIK, just like Infinity, the Continental Uniroyal brand is not an OES to any manufacturer. Just saying....

and another plus 1.

continental were great until they got close to the limit and were then amazingly noisy, so much so that I changed them early.

Goodyear F1 Eagles for me. So much quieter than OEM Contis.

In all the rain we have been having recently they have not put a foot wrong even when at highish speed on a very wet M1 in a thunderstorm.

Top tyre in my book.

Uniroyal never was classified as economy tyre :)

I think www.tyrereviews.co.uk is one of the best places to check people's opinions.

I had uniroyals then goodyear f1 and I'm back on uniroyals and I don't see a reason to even try anything else :)

Original tyres  from Skoda are still on my car - Pirelli Cinturato P7 Ecoimpact

Absolutely no complaints regards noise, wear or wet weather handling.

I think you've just proved my point; who in the tyre police classified Uniroyals as a mid-range tyre? (albeit I with a five min google, I cant find them fitted for anything less than £60!)

But I'm please you rate them

+1 I have these on our MKI Superb - nice tyres.

What mileage is on it?

I should have said - 13,000 miles on the rubber over exactly 2 years and I've put 8000 of that wear on them (car bought from Skoda Ireland - it was their Combi promotion car - with 5000 miles on the clock).

Tread depth today is an even 5mm across both the fronts and an even 6-7mm across both rears. Tires have not been rotated (yet).

Should also say that the roads where I am are a really crappy, rough surface quality (you're from Ireland so you'll know the score - council spraying tar and spreading gravel on it and then claiming it's a quality resurfacing! Lasted 2 weeks on the main road near me. It so good that they leave the "flying gravel" warning signs up for three years and counting....   :@  ).

That's unusual for Pirellis. Any Pirellie tyre I've ever had has worn like it was made of cheese.

To address the OP's question, the EU tyre rating include a noise test. Any of the online tyre retailers will allow you select based on noise level. I've had good experience with Goodyear Efficient Grip Performance on my '99 Passat in size 205/55 R16. Different tyre size is probably going to impact on noise generated, especially a change in section width.

Yes - same for me on past Pirelli shoes. That's part of the reason I have kept an eye on these and have been pleasantly surprised. I ate Pirelli P6000's that were stock  on previous cars and always moved to something else when it was time to replace them.

The height of the tyre have great impact on mileage.
