First Tesla "autopilot" driver death

Sad news. Hopefully, it will drive more innovation and result in a better system. The avoidance video he posted, ironic that too was a white truck.

So looking forward 10years the lorry has had a retro fit system installed by some boffins, the incident probably would not have happened.

DAngers of being an early adopter and trusting the tech too much.

I'd bet that the disclaimer says that the driver must be in a position to take over at any point.  Wonder if there was any braking or if this guy stuck on the auto and was reading facebook etc.?

I heard in one report he was watching a film...

They do state that your hands must be on the wheel, ready to take over at any point.

Unfortunately no matter how good a bunch of sensors are, they are never going to be 100% reliable at picking up everything on the road.

We know humans aren't very good at that.

On another forum, there is a topic running about how the "LIZARD BRAIN" in drivers runs in the background. it controls a lot of actions and reactions. next time you find that you have applied brakes without thinking- kid behind car etc- something you didn't really notice- Lizard Brain has and it's constantly being updated .Possibly one reason why older more experienced drivers don't suffer from reaction downgrade with age.

I don't see the point of "driverless" car that needs a driver!..technology needs to move on a long way before you get me in one.

It's not stated as driverless though is it? It's just a fancier cruise control.

Also...it's still in beta.

Tesla requires drivers to remain engaged and aware when Autosteer is enabled. Drivers must keep their hands on the steering wheel.

I presume it does not use radar like my MK7 Golf with ACC, as that has no problems seeig a white truck etc...

Must just use visual camera or thermal, but both will fail when the target blends in with the background...

Cameras & new technology being the business that the unfortunate driver was in.

Is that coincidence?

There will be conspiracy theories into the death of the Ex-Navy Seal and if the systems could have been over ridden remotely, investigations as well no doubt.

"Reptile brain" is the term.

But that's not where your 'programmed responses are stored' their much higher up the pecking order in your frontal cortex. Your brain is actually running some pretty complex stuff semi-consciously. Taking inputs from multiple sources and checking against prestored responses then tying that to muscle memory and preloaded movements.

^ Turning pixels of coloured light into meaningful information about the world is something that is both astonishingly difficult, and totally taken for granted.

Quite sure the driver never read the umpteen pages US-only disclaimer in light grey micro-texting, neither the yellow labels strewn all over the car :)
