Just bought an 11 plate CR170 DSG Octavia VRS - had a few questions

Featured Replies

Hello,

I just purchased a 2011 Octavia VRS CR170 DSG in white, what a car!

It's covered 71k although you wouldn't believe it looking at it, it's near immaculate! 55k of that was in the first 3 years, I guess someone had been doing a lot of motorway miles on it

It's excellent spec with Columbus NAV, bluetooth, adaptive xenon headlights, auto lights/wipers, maxidot highline display and a few other bits like space saver, sun blinds, multi-function steering wheel.

The car's also been Revo mapped and has a detachable witter towbar fitted that's completely hidden when not in use, brilliant!

I had a few questions if anyone could offer some advice.

1. The car was never specced from new with parking sensors or camera (not sure if camera was an option) does anyone know if there's any direct retrofit camera kit available for the Columbus head unit?

2. According to the service manual the timing belt is not due until 180,000km and does not seem to state any time limit, is this really the case as it seems potentially a very long time to go without one?

3. I previously owned an 8P Audi RS3 and the DSG in the Octavia seems a bit lazy at times in D and hangs on a bit too long in S in some gears, I know Revo offer a DSG remap, has anyone had this done on a Diesel VRS?     Did you find it was worth the money?

4. Any essential mods worth doing right away?

I think that was all really for now, thanks in advance!

Cambelt kit/waterpump needs doing if it hasn't been done already. There is a time limit on it as well as a mileage limit. 4 years on the prefacelift, don't know if the facelift '09 onwards was stretched out longer.

Snap I have nearly the same car

I bought and fitted the camera mentioned in this thread.

http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/390491-octavia-ii-prefl-camera-for-columbus/

It's not cheap but fits and works perfectly but requires some coding with vcds.

The time limit on the belt is five years According to my local dealer also the dsg fluid should be changed at 40k so I'd check if that's been done.

I find the gears to be lazy in d too but it learns how you drive so push the loud pedal a bit harder and it adapts.

Best mod I did was too get the grill colour coded as the chrome looks so out of place. Also fitting Bluetooth if you don't already have it is pretty easy and it integrates well with maxidot and Columbus

The timing belt is 5 years on cars registered after September 2010 (4 years before) so as mentioned you are due now.

Skoda do fixed pricing, make sure you get the waterpump done at the same time as these are prone to leaking, especially on higher mileage cars, see here...

I'm surprised it doesn't have rear parking sensors, on highly specced cars (such as yours), especially those with very expensive options such as the nav and xenon's, parking sensors are nearly always ticked.

They were available as a dealer fit option but I think (certainly on the pre-facelift cars) they didn't integrate with the head unit, plus they didn't sit flush / were recessed like the factory set-up. The good news is the locations are marked on the inside of the bumper to make retro-fitting easier.

Cheers for the info, that's annoying as I brought it up with the dealer that sold me the car and they advised it didn't need done, I should have checked and factored that into the price, oh well, live and learn.    :notme:

Yeah daft not speccing sensors really, I'll go down the camera route I think.

Cheers for that, exactly what I was after and not daft money really, I'll get that ordered ASAP.

The DSG oil and filter were done at 45k, I'll get them done again probably the beginning of next year which should still be well under 80k, got a pretty reasonable quote from a local VAG specialist today for the various bits.

Grille looks great and as it happens there's been a stone chip on the chrome which has started to lift just a tiny bit so a good excuse to get it done, do you have a front on picture of your grille I could see?

Cheers for the replies and advice, much appreciated

If you do want parking sensors you have a few choices if you want the OEM route:

- rear (4 sensors) http://www.cars-equipment.com/www/en/shop/park-assistent-sets-kits-4/oem-rear-parktronic-ops-for-vw-2/

- front and rear (8 sensors) http://www.cars-equipment.com/www/en/shop/park-assistent-sets-kits-4/oem-ops-parktronic-skoda-octavia-2/

- park assist (12 sensors and will self-park) http://www.cars-equipment.com/www/en/shop/pla-sets-parts-2/oem-pla-20-kit-12x-sensor-2/

Just depends how much you want to spend and how many holes you'd like to drill!

If you choose the park assist (12 sensors) you need to check your ABS pump and instrument cluster support PLA 2.0 as a 2011 might not. The 4 and 8 sensor versions don't have any ABS or instrument cluster requirements :)

What a legend!    Brilliant mate thanks for that.

Not fussed on fancy park yourself option but I'd defo be interested in the front and rear OPS kit.

Question for you, how does one go about cutting the holes properly for these types of sensors, only ones I've done before were proud sitting type and i just used the supplied holesaw, was fine because the sensor covered the hole but I'm thinking it might not be clean enough for this type?

Cheers!

There is an official tool for exactly that: http://www.cars-equipment.com/www/en/shop/park-assist-parts-5/oem-bea000001-tool-for-cutting-out/

Basically drill a small hole using the marks on the inside of the bumpers, then use the tool to make a hole of exactly the right size :)

Making the VRS a wee bit lower also helps ride quality and fun. We have the H&R -50mm cup kit on ours. Change the oil and filter regularly too to keep everything clean.

Here's the white grill
