Brake slipping in the Wet

Featured Replies

Hi All

I have a Faiba Bohemia estate (2006)

I have had an issue for well over a year now where in wet/damp conditions there is occasional slipping when braking

its difficult to explain but car starts to brake then there is a split second where i feel i slip in the pedal where there is no braking then brake kicks in again. it tends to happen more when braking hard but sometimes under light braking but always when road is wet

Strangely it only seems to happen once on journey, almost as if it happening causes something to reset

brakes have been checked, relevant parts replaced, but the problem remains

Any suggestions appreciated

Thanks in adavance

Do you have exactly the same sized tyres on all four corners? Please post the sizes if they vary at all.

Yeah they are all 195/50 R15, they all had to be replaced at the last MOT

Can you hear a rapid clicking sound when it happens?

i don't think so, nothing noticeable, as far as i am aware,

Can you feel a rapid 'pulsing' through the brake pedal?

i don't think so, what are you thinking?

We're thinking that the ABS system is triggering erroneously, you may have a dodgy connection to a wheel sensor which plays up when it's wet, scanning the codes should indicate if a wheel sensor is intermittent.

Antilock kicking in I think is the idea.

I'm wondering about a blockage in the vacuum lines feeding the servo which gets "blown" out of the way when you brake the first time.

Could you try pumping the brake pedal until it goes hard before starting the engine, and see if that makes a difference?

That makes sense as it only does it once

thanks Ill give that a go, also a mate of mine said it might be an issue with the assistance servo, he is going to have a look next week i will post back what he finds

That's also possible, since the vacuum lines supple vacuum to the (vacuum) servo, which is what reduces the pedal effort from "you have to kick the pedal kitten hard" to "normal effort".

Is traction control the same as the VRS?

If so does this come on when the slipping starts?

Even though you have new tires, if they are budget summer tires they may spin when there is enough torque, but you would see the traction light come on.
