Brake Shuddering

Yesterday I had to perform an emergency stop and with that my front driverside (offside or nearside) shuddered really badly. It happend again today when I had to brake suddenly.

Any ideas?

Do you feel the shuddering in the pedal too? Thinking along the lines of warped disc possibly from caliper sticking. After driving feel each wheel to see if it's hotter than its counterpart on other side.

It makes me think of either what #FUBAR said, or an ABS fault, which is better diagnosed with VCDS (not a generic "code reader") than a web conversation.

No don't think I did feel it through the pedal now you mention it.

Console or wishbone bushes.

As tech1e has said, probably a bush somewhere, or possibly a sticking caliper slider. Could even just be corrosion build up on the caliper carrier the pads sit in.

Just sounds like the  the ABS kicking in to me. Happened on mine a few months ago when one of the  wheels skidded slightly on some oil or something.

Grab the wheel quarter to three and give a shake, might be track rod ends, my Mrs had on her car I thought it was a warped disc.

VCDS is VAG specific, but returns many many more meaningful codes than generic readers.

As in back and forward or one way then the other? What should I be looking for? Will the engine need to be on?

EDIT: Just done this and there sounded like there was a knocking sound from front right wheel area

What year of manufacture? I'd have thought that ABS was mandatory on all Furbies, but possibly not, and age is relevant to anything that was legislated.

In which case you very definitely do have ABS!

So now go out on a quiet bit of road somewhere with some loose gravel or similar and try to deliberately trigger the ABS, see if the shudder is the same?

If it is shudder through the steering wheel/body when braking then it is steering or suspension related, where as if it is felt through the peddle then it is abs kicking it

No; the light signals a failed ABS system.

 

The idea behind #20 is that you should be able to lock the brakes or fire the ABS doing that and feel what it's like.
