Where's the power gone

Featured Replies

I'm currently with Octy. But circumstances may change in the household and to a Yeti for various reasons I am horrified the 1.8 Tsi has gone. And 1.2 is the petrol now. Will it keep up with modern traffic conditions, overtaking etc.when did bigger engines go.????

now they are a 1.4 150ps 2,0l scr D 150ps

It all depends on what you plan to use it for. Our previous 1.2 TSI was a school run special for most of the time. Longer journeys and holidays were always reserved for my Superb. I personally wouldn't use a 1.2 for long holiday trips fully laden with the crap that a family of 4 has to carry. It's now got 110PS - which is respectable - but it isn't quite enough grunt when fully laden - IMO of course.

The biggest problem with the Yeti is the weird spec/engine restrictions. For example, the 1.4TSI 150 is only available on the L&K model which only comes with a brown interior. This puts quite a few people off (it put us right off!).

The 4x4 Outdoor SE, SE-L, Monte Carlo and L&K can have the 2.0TDI 150 engine, but the only petrol option on everything bar the L&K is the 1.2 TSI 110. The FWD City version of the yeti can only have the 110PS version of the 2.0TDI. I cannot get my head around the stupid engine options!

We would have preferred an SE-L with a 1.4TSI under the bonnet, but we had to opt for the 4x4 TDI150 instead.

Basically I find results of my medical condition tomorrow. If negative my Vrs goes, wife drives. She says it's too big and has always refused to try it. She has a Ibiza 1.4. Constantly complains of no power. She says she like the Yeti, which is fine by me. It just seems it'll be under powered add said above. Even the diesel looks slow. Notice my dealer has a 61 plate 1.8 tsi.

To be fair, anything in the yeti range will feel slow after a 220 TSI.

My wife's got a petrol vRS and it'll take some adjustment from that to a 150PS oil burner  :|

Even a 1.8TSI had 'only' 160PS. The 1.4TSI 150 gets close, but only if you want to spend top money on a brown interior.....

The CR170 4x4 was the quickest Yeti overall.

As long as you have realistic expectations there is absolutely nothing wrong with the 1.2 TSI. I've done holidays in the West Country with four adults, two dogs and all that goes with it (including a large roof box) and it copes very well, never noticeably struggled on the hills although I'll grant you it will never set the world on fire on 0-60. I went from a 2.0l  diesel Volvo V50 to a 1,2 Yeti and although the Yeti is on paper a less powerful engine I never really noticed the difference and generally just prefer the drive of the Yeti over the Volvo so no regrets. Don't dismiss a 1.2 until you (or your wife) have had a test drive, you might be pleasantly surprised.

Thanks all. The main crux is I may not be driving at all if specialist says do, but I'm hopeful, today's the day. I have always done main driving. My wife did have a Z3 2.8 which she loved, but. Changed to practical "ladies that lunch" 1.4 Ibiza. Always complained lack of overtaking power (obviously). So as she's been driving us everywhere it's struck her it's no good for normal use. But loves the Yeti look. We'll see how things progress first. If she insists it would have to be a used one I think.

Ta All

Ah, overtaking.....I remember that )))

Our 1.4 150 TSI is no slouch (and our other car is a BMW 135i) so we are used to lots of power. How powerful I'd the 1.4 Ibiza - some of the 1.4s come in well below 100bhp so you may not be comparing like for like.

The current 1.4 in the Yeti is lighter than the old 1.8 and torque is similar so it is seen as a direct replacement, but far more economical. The 1.8 was a poor seller due to its thirst. The lack of spec choice and lack of a DSG option notwithstanding, the 1.4 TSI is all the petrol Yeti you will need.

The 1.2 TSI (the older 105bhp version) vs the 1.4 Ibiza is a pretty even match surprisingly.

The Yeti is actually slower to 60 and has a lower top speed which is probably due to the size/weight (1295kg vs 1075kg).

It does have more torque thought and with it being a turbo charged engine will probably feel quicker and have better rolling acceleration (30-60 etc).

Good luck with medical...

The only answer is ..... try one.

On paper the 1.4 Ibiza and 1.2TSi Yeti have similar figures but that's ringing every gear to the red line.

The 1.4 feels gutless through most of it's rev range because it's normally aspirated (Little torque at lower revs and midrange). The 1.2TSi produces much more torque and it's available from 1400rpm (110PS Version).

Yes you will find it needs most of the revs for an overtake but it certainly doesn't feel underpowered especially if coupled with the crisp 7 speed DSG.

A 1.4 TSI 150PS Minimum is pretty good torque wise with 250Nm from 1,500-3,500 rpm.

Driving one is really the best way to decide if they have enough go to suit your driving style.

Doesn't show the 1.4 in configuratior as I see it.For me 0-60 under 10 secs is a must. We will be checking with dealer though, and testing though.O very good terms with them so be no problem.

As I expected I do need treatment for my issue. So Vrs will be Going.

Thanks to all with posts on here.

Going back to Octy forum now. But coud be returning. Will look at Diesel also. It's upto the wife, she will be driving it. I'm just the advisor????

PS. Will look at Diesel also.

The 1.4TSI is there but just in the Outdoor L&K.

1.4 L&K 150 TSI 0-60 is 8.5 sec if I recall correctly.

Yep, hate the brown interior, what on earth are Skoda doing with colours schemes at moment,????

I like the Rosso Brunei red paint they did across the whole range. That seems to be shrinking now.

Actually much as as don't want to,2.0 diesel could be an option as we drop from 2 cars to one that is increasing mileage on the one obviously,so would justyfy initial extra cost. Next week's job!!!????

The Magazines and website often get the 0-60 mph wrong. Then they are repeated time after time.

I believe the official Skoda Figures are 0-100km (62mph) 8.7 seconds.

0-60mph is 8.4 seconds.

It's the 30/40 to 60-ish times that really need to be shouted about for real driving i.e. overtaking.

Some lower power cars do really well with the right gears and enough road :D. Therein lies the problem with testing I guess... what's the right gear ;)

I should get a data logger, but there is no way skoda will lend me one of each...

@decuk, good luck with the treatment. Fingers crossed for you, no matter what car your new chauffeur is driving. :ducks:

Decision made, my Vrs has to go. Driving is now my wife's task, certainly for the for foreseeable future. So serious looking for a replacement starts
