Getting hold of XP or Win98

Featured Replies

Win 10 has just sunk to a new low for me. It's unforgivable.

It won't run Sid Meier's Pirates. One of greatest games ever made.

So plan B is to run an XP or Win98 VM in Virtualbox. Problem being I don't have a Win98 or XP disk any more.

I possibly have a semi legit OEM XP license from my old laptop which is running linux.

Any way to get these without resorting to the malware infested warez sites? Would pay a few quid for a copy but not much.

I can get you an ISO of either if you want.

You should be able to re-activate your XP licence.

I run Pirates on my W10 PC. Is yours a Steam copy or an old CD?

May be worth buying it on Steam as I know quite a few old games which have fixed installers/launchers on Steam so they work on W10 :)

I might be able to help if SoftScoop isn't, also a little bit closer, not that it matters if it's sent over t'internet.

However a quick google for windows 98se iso appears to show a site offering the iso and keys for download - whether that's legal and/or legit is a totally different matter.  If it's a DOS issue (I think from 8 onwards windows stripped out DOS) you could try something like DOSBox dos emulator rather than VM and a full OS.

It's a CD copy not Steam.

If someone is up for chucking an XP/98SE iso on a share someone ware that'd be handy. MS used to put ISOs up but I guess it's W10 or nothing now.

I assume your licence key is for home edition of XP?

Have you tried http://www.theisozone.com/

There are some great tutorials on getting old games to work; I have had a 50% success rate getting Win95/98 games to play on a Win7 64Bit system; and a couple of partial success's, where the game plays, the video is fine, but the sound is screwed up.

It's not to hand but yes I think so. But it was a business spec laptop. Hmm better check might have had pro.

will right clicking the game .exe and going into properties and setting compatibility mode to "windows xp" not allow the game to run? its done the trick for me on a few older games

Actually, give this one a try.

All of them including SP3

Cheers, downloading Pro and Home now on the office 200M line :p

I did have a dodgy Win98Se / Win2k but I think I chucked them thinking I'd never need it again. Still got an original Win95 CD somewhere although I did chuck the floppy disk version.

£5.99 for the game on steam and would prob be able to download it in under a minute lol You can add or could add games to your steam account if you had the CD/DVD version to then just get them through steam instead, might even be worth a try. I got Return To Castle Wolfenstein on steam recently even though it's a much older game again and it works a treat on W10.

ps. 'Sid Meier's Pirates!'  :D

One of the greatest games ever my friend, no laughing matter it doesn't work.

How else will I'll fulfil the need to for a 40 gun Ship of the Line and wooing Governors' daughters in the same place.

Amazon do legitimate OEM copies of it, but you'll have to be quick it sells out fast.

You can register a CD key on Steam so it can be downloaded from there you know?

How much!

Virtualbox running an install right now. My old WinXP pro key worked so I've even legit (ish).

Run it in compatability mode for xp

Run it in compatability mode for xp

If only.

Nice thing about XP is that if you've a legit copy and key it won't work now because MS have shut down the license activation servers. So the only way to run it even in a VM is to get a cracked copy. Nice work there MS.

No, compatability mode. Right click the exe and you'll find an option in there to run as a previous version of Windows.

Run the Program Compatibility Troubleshooter

In the search box, type run programs.

Select Run programs made for previous versions of Windows, and then select Next.

Choose the program you want to fix. ...

Select Next, and then follow the instructions in the troubleshooter.

In the more modern versions of windows MS completely removed DOS so anything that relies on it wont work even under compatibility mode.

Sorry Gadget what I meant was I've tried all that and lots more to the point of hacking the config files in the game.

I think it's an issue around screen resolution but running it windowed or dropping res to old skool levels does work either.

All this for this, epic editing skills I thought, maybe I'm just emotionally sensitive at the moment.

For what it's worth... I found we could run dos stuff in linux for less cpu than a modern windows os, forget which one the last dos bit was in.

Anyhow you might find... run a linux vm; might as well go ubuntu for most online documentation, then install wine, it might work! It will be an experience to find out anyway.

I use wine to run firefox, because 4OD and other services don't support chrome or firefox under linux, so I run wine for firefox, ta-dah thank you.

Incidentally, that video has more story and content than no mans sky ;) ( This years hype indy title ) and the gphx are better lol... although the explorable area is a tad smaller :)
