Niggles with Skoda Superb 2012 that I picked up today (first time user)

Featured Replies

Hey, this is my first time driving a DSG and certainly first Skoda car.

1) The car rolls back on a hill... it does not have hill hold to give that torque convertor feeling :/ ? (the test drive route had no hills... true)

2) When I press open central locking on key, I can only open the driver side door, I cannot open any passenger / boot door. (is this related to "check deadlock" or something message I get when I turn engine off? This didn't happen when I test drove the car.

3) there's a sort of squeaking noise, a high pitched plasticky sound sometimes when the suspension goes across road imperfections. The sound sounds like it's coming from inside the cabin. When I push the plastic casing of the DSG gearbox, it seems to make a similar squeaky noise?

4) does the sat nav not searchable by postcode? (biggest oversight ever if true?)

The DSG should hold on hills

One press opens the driver door. press a second time and all of the doors open

No idea what this is

When you enter the town there should be a post code option in the lower left corner

1) I just hold on handbrake until bite

2) press unlock twice and will open all doors. Depending on spec if you hold lock button it'll fold in wing mirrors.

3) not sure, my parcel shelf has always been noisy

4) depends what software you've got loaded on your satnav. There are lots of posts about the Columbus on here to help you.

Good luck.

I've owned mine for 3 years now 2009 elegance 170 DSG, had some maintenance jobs but still love it, great engine and fantastic spec for price.

 1) using the handbrake seems to defeat the purpose of not driving a manual lol. With regards to the previous poster, the roll seems to come about not when I take foot off brake, but when I press accelator, I will experiment with timings more to see. I just thought hill hold was a feature not seen in 2012.

2) thanks for that. the car is definitely more advanced than anything I have ever driven before (automatic headlights? wow!) (not difficult as my previous cars were old or basic work vehicle)

3) what is a parcel shelf? that board attached to the strings?

4) ok I will check that out.

The car I have is a 2012 Elegance 170 DSG.

another quirk I noticed is that the car seems to love being in high gears and low revs. At least compared to my old 2 litre petrol turbo auto (saab), and how I would drive a manual car (though I'm hardly the most competent, hence going for this DSG to replace auto)

I'd suggest some bedtime reading with the manual - there's a lot going on in these cars :)

You can go into the configuration menu on the MFD and change how the unlock behaviour works. You have selective unlocking enabled which just unlocks the driver's door initially, and unlocks the rest on a second push of the button. You can set it so that all doors unlock on the first press.

Hill-hold should be available on your car, but it may not have been enabled or the previous owner may have had it disabled (some people hate it). If you can find someone near you with VCDS they should be able to re-enable it for you if you really want it. Note that it's not a substitute for using the handbrake when stopped at junctions/traffic lights.

Do a search for trim squeaks/rattles on this forum - I think all the common ones are documented by now.

I'm not sure about the sat nav and postcodes - Ireland doesn't have a sane, functioning postcode system so we have to navigate by addresses.

I will look into the hill hold thing through the manual, I had go to the car to get it. Couldn't find an electronic one online :/ would have been easier. I can't believe anyone who would buy a car without a clutch would hate it enough to pay a guy with a fancy gadget to change the software to do it, seems extreme. Is option not easily enabled/disabled by driver?

when you say using "handbrakes when stopped at junction / traffic lights", do you have the car in Neutral then instead of Drive? I've never used the handbrake in my old auto, only stopping on hills on manual work vehicle.

At the risk of starting an off-topic discussion, the argument is that without the handbrake applied the car is not fully under control at a stop (what if your foot slips off the brake pedal while the 'box is in Drive for example?). If I'm stopped for more than a second or two I'll always pull up the handbrake; whether I go into neutral or not depends on the nature of the stop. Also, brake lights can be quite dazzling to the driver behind you, so it's a nice courtesy to them to apply the handbrake and release the pedal if you're going to be stopped in front of them for a while.

Hill hold is only switchable through diagnostics. It's a convenience feature to momentarily hold the car when you take your foot off the brake pedal. The DSG is basically a robotised manual, so the ECU needs a little time to engage the clutch, much the same as a human driver would.

PDF version of the owners manual is available from Skoda's website, though it's a little tricky to find: http://ws.skoda-auto.com/OwnersManualService/Data/en/Superb_3T/11-2011/Manual/Superb/B6_Superb_OwnersManual.pdf

There's also a mobile app that lets you access the manual and other info for your car. Search for Skoda Service in the app store on your device.

This.

Amazing how often this happens at junctions and you are just being completely blinded - the problem has only got worse with the newer LED rear lights in Merc's/ Audi's/ BMW's... It's not that hard just to push it into neutral and put the handbrake up is it?

I'll stop ranting now...

Never leave the car standing still in "D" with the handbrake on, it causes premature clutch wear, whereas holding the car on the footbrake in "D" is acceptable for short periods.

Holding the car on a hill in "D" is possible with most normal automatics, but is unsafe, (if the engine stops then the car will runaway.....), best practice is to use handbrake, & release it once you've selected "D" as you apply power with the throttle pedal.

DC ,

You should add Skoda to that list, many of them including my Superb FL have LED rear lights and brake lights.

1) press once only drivers door opens

Press twice and all doors will open

Press open twice and on second press hold switch down and all windows will open

Press lock and doors lock

Press lock and hold switch down, mirrors will fold in and Windows close if open

There's a door locking sequence as well ( warning on dash when you knock car off), think it's one press all doors deadlocked and unable to open from inside, two presses and it allows you to open car from inside ( I think maybe worth a read up )

2) I know you get a strange sound from the shockers at times when you can hear it, it's the way they are working. Positive there was a thread that also mentioned them

3) positive you can use post code
