Buying advice?

Featured Replies

Hi guys

Apologies if I've overlooked it but I couldn't find a buyer's guide for an Octavia III when I searched the forum. Any tips for me as I'm looking to buy a used Octavia? (ideally a petrol auto estate VRS)

Thanks!

Mike

We dont have a guide.

Oldest ones are 2013 so most problems have been fixed under warranty.

The main problem is depreciation, with skoda selling new ones discounted with 0% finance. A 3 year old vRS hatch manual standard spec only trades for around £10k.

Have a look on broadspeed at the discounted prices.

One issue is road noise and a booming noise. So always take a long test drive.

Ok great thanks for the advice. I'll do some reading on the road noise and booming noise issues.

Some of us don't get these problems at all. :)

Hopefully they are not too common then :-)

Check that the DSG auto box shifts gear up & down smoothly & not jerking feeling/movement, the 6 speed DSG auto is very reliable...

As mentioned above road noise but most of the time it's down to the tyres, as I found out, when I changed from conti sport 2 & 5 to Nokian weatherproof tyres, the road noise is so much more quieter...

Definitely check for booming noise to from the rear too as above but other than that the octavia VRS DSG petrol estate is a well rounded complete vehicle to which I don't think there is any other issue's to report of, unless anyone else can share some information.

Brand fanboys never do.  Plus they get 0-60 in 6 seconds and 65mpg :dull:

I got shedloads of road noise from my VRS but it was the first time I'd driven a car on 18 inch wheels so assumed it was normal.

Plus, having now driven my Focus ST on 19 inch wheels, the ride is even noisier so I'm guessing the bigger the wheel, the noisier the ride.

The noise might be dependent on tyre choice

Mines on 19's and is not boomy at all. It's quite raspy when accelerating but it's supposed to be like that

Boomy noise is down to tyres. Which could explain the fanboys.

Best thing to do is spend some time reading on the forum, make some notes and then if you need more information ask.

You should look for (un)usual wear and tear at the interior.

On steering wheel, gearlever, glove box, around safety belt etc.

Its much easier to get goodwill from the seller before you pay for the car.

A week later they will just tell you that this is normal wear that they dont wont to pay for.

Great advice thanks guys. I used to have a 1 series a while back and the combination of M sport suspension, 18" wheels, and Bridgestone run flat tyres was awful. Switching to non run-flat Eagle F1's made a world of difference. I'd best get searching the forum for tyre recommendations.

Michelin Pilot Sports would get my vote, but they've been replaced by the Pilot Sport 4.

I've got the MPS3's on my mx5 and they're great so good to know they work well on an Octavia too.

Don't presume I'm a fanboy. You know too little about me to judge. And if you knew me, you'd clearly know that - while I could be called many unflattering things which I would agree with - fanboy definitely isn't one.

I just don't get any booming noise. That's all.

Now, tyre noise on certain road surfaces is a different thing altogether, but that I put down to the Bridgestones on the back or Continentals on the front. Or both. all of which will be replaced by Michelins in due course.

And i'm not a fanboy for Michelin either.
