Paint top coat question

Featured Replies

I have a couple of foglight surrounds for mrs' vRS which I need to paint as they come supplied unpainted.

I have done the primer stage using Halfords plastic primer and all ok so far so will be starting on the top coat side of things shortly.

My question is this.....

I already have a Skoda official spray paint kit (2 can kit with paint can and lacquer can) but the cans are only smallish compared to the normal spray cans of 400-500ml (Think they are 250ml). Rather than having to buy another couple of Skoda kits is it possible to mix paint manufacturers during the topcoat stage? I mean could I use a larger can of Halfords made-up-in-store Diamond Silver paint for the first few coats of top coat then just use the official Skoda can for the last couple of coats to get the colour match right before adding the lacquer?

Does that make sense?

If its a colour coded "big can" shouldnt make any difference as its all the same colour.

If you are ever unsure about the reactions of different Rattle Cans Paints and Lacquers be sure to try the process on a spare piece of Plastic

similar to that you are going to paint.

ie, get some part and it is not wasteful to practice using that Primer, Colour Coat, top coat and lacquer as you are going to do your good part.

Same preparation, drying times etc.

Saves getting it wrong when using different paints / solvents.
