POWER STEERING LIGHT RE. MOT

Featured Replies

I'm aware that my Roomster will fail its MOT because the power steering light is on.   Had a new pump (second h fitted some months ago and it has been working fine but the garage that fitted it could not get rid of the power steering yellow fault light on dashboard.   Also had a small VW dealer look at it and they couldn't clear light also.   It's possible that the main Skoda dealer may be able to clear the light as I assume they have the authorised/up to date computer software to be able to 'reset' the light.   But they may not be able to do that and I'm just wondering if there is any way around this problem so as to get it through the MOT?

The second hand pump came off a 2013 Roomster, which has only done 10,000 miles (mine is 2012) and was the same type and has worked fine in my car ever since.    But if the Skoda dealer can't clear the light I'm assuming I've got to pay around £1000 for a new pump that I don't need!

Does anyone have any ideas as to how to get round this (if Skoda can't re programme pump to clear fault light) or do I have to pay an enormous sum of money because of some electronic reprogramming technicality issue?

Any help much appreciated!!!!!

Need to know what code is stored and thus causing the light.

I assume then that only the skoda dealer will be able to access whatever code is stored!

Full VCDS should be able to do that.

Just rang the garage to see what diagnostics they used to try and clear the light, which happened to be full  VCDS.    So doesn't seem as that will be any good to find the code after all.

I'ts obviously all down to the power steering pump electronics control unit.   I wonder if, because, my car is 2012, that there is some kind of authorisation code to enable access to the codes?   I know that modern cars are more and more tied in with dealers and codes/passwords etc...

Maybe a second hand pump can't be 'reprogrammed' or that Skoda have it that only new pumps can be set up to work with the car without any lights coming on?

I am waiting back from a call from skoda technician, so will be interesting to hear what he has to say?

Thanks

Or the garage might not know what they are doing ;)

Have a look on these two threads, you might find someone local who can give you an autoscan from VCDS:

Assuming you get an autoscan, post it here and we can see any error codes stored which could suggest what the problem might be :)

Thanks for the map,  emailed a person not too far from me.......

have just found out some more info. from a specialist diagnostic place and the guy said that the light could be coming on because the pump/ steering needs re calibrating.....

That's probably why an error came up when the garage fitted the pump and diagnostics came up with angle sensor error........

May be something that has to be done by specialist or Skoda....but will await from chap I emailed to see what he says!

If this recalibration is like the mk5 Golf it's a simple matter of driving slowly forwards then holding the steering at each lock for 30 seconds

That may be useful info!  Thanks

No calibration required on a Roomster.

Sounds like it might need coding and may have come preset to read from the wrong angle sensor.

This setup has either an angle sensor on the rack or behind the steering wheel. If the unit is coded for the wrong one it will work but the light will remain on the dash, VCDS can code these units but it must be done with the engine off and the ignition on.
