Handling problem with 17's

Featured Replies

I got mine 'laser-aligned' by JBS, when I had my suspension modded. Ring Sarah for a price on alignment-only.

John.

I have 205/40/R16 tyres, so Schwarz you and I are running the same profile tyres. You'll need to put in 36psi up front and 34psi in the rear. Recommended.

Im running 28F and 25R (still playing around) but ive gone for wider tyres on the std 16" rims.. and it feels "wierd"

i used to have 17"s on but got rid because they made the handling a bit poor :(

there are no direction arrows on asymmetric tires....thats why the are asyymetric

however they have an inner and an outer side......

as for your cars floating behaviour mine have that too on the original 16"s infact all fabia`s I have tried did that only cure is a new suspension....

it can be quite scaring when u feel the back end starting to overtake the front end round corners...

last time the dealer fixed a few rattles and the enormous road noise with my vrs(Bridgestone tyres) with 3k on the clock. later I found the pressure was 28 all round  pump it back to 34/32 and put up with the tyre roar:finger:

Just a thought - aren't Yoko A539s too low a speed rating to go on a fabia vRS? If you've got 205/40/17 then they will be 84V which is lower than the standard 205/45/16 83W and could invalidate your insurance if you have a crash... should be ok is you went for 215/40ZR17 83W A539s though.

ok, now I'm sh****ing myself! You were right about the speed ratings on the A539's, looks like I'll have to stick the old wheels back on until I can afford new tyres only problem is they have got hardly any tread left on them! Would the lower speed rating be what is giving that floaty feeling at lower speeds aswell? Honestly thought i had checked everything before buying the new wheels:(

Would the lower speed rating be what is giving that floaty feeling at lower speeds aswell?

Very, very unlikely.

Doubtful.

Did you tell the place that sold you the wheels and tyres, what car they were for? If so, and if it wasn't too long / too many miles ago, you *might* be able to go back to them and tell them they sold you tyres that were not fit for the application you specified they were for, due to the fact they have a speed rating lower than the manufacturer's specification. As such your insurers have told you they won't cover you if you keep those tyres. You'll probably be told to p1ss off but if they are feeling particularly helpful they might sort you out, or at least give you a discount on some replacement tyres.

TBH they will probably be OK but it's just a question of whether you want to risk it in the event of an accident - an insurance inspector probably wouldn't spot it if you had lower speed rated tyres on standard rims, but on aftermarket wheels they are more likely to check. Unfortunately it's often the case that when people buy new rims, they skimp on the tyres to afford bigger / nicer wheels. I know the feeling, I've got Kumho KU31's on mine at the moment and I'm doing my damndest to wear them out so I can ditch them, they're rubbish. Should have stuck with the 712s. Cheap is dear, as they say...

yeah i told them they were for the vrs, i got them about a week before xmas from motorworld, will have to put my angry hat on and pay them a visit:mad:

Make sure you take a big spanner in your pocket...

That's what all the mechanics will be wielding when they encircle you for being angry with their gaffer LMAO.

Best bet is to go in with your happy hat on, and if they don't play ball, write a letter to their head office.

Oh and a top tip:

When you go to get new tyres, get hold of them physically before committing to buy them and give the sidewall a good flex...

If it's solid, you're onto a winner... If it feels flexible, choose something else.
