I tried looking this up in other topics but I can't find any topic that includes both the VW specification and the viscosity.

 

 

I am closing in to the service time on my BKD Octavia from 2007 (got 1700 km left) and I have just got the Check engine oil yellow light in the dash today. 

I checked the level and it is on low (C range if you take it by the book).

 

 

Since my car is on a QG1 service interval (no DPF), the books states I should either use VW 506 01 or VW 507 00 oil. Isn't this a little vague? What about viscosity?

I mean, under the bonnet I can see the previously used oil was Shell Helix Ultra 5W-30 but nothing about the VW specification.

 

After looking up a number of oil brands online I can see the VW 507 00 compliant Shell oil has a 0W-30 viscosity while the equivalent Castrol is 5W-30. 

 

 

For the moment, I need to top up and I am in doubt about what is more important. The viscosity or the VW specification? Also... is it OK to mix brands? I have the shell recommendation sticker all over the engine area - even in the cover for the owner's manual but the only 5W-30 Shell oil I can find here where I live is not VW 507 00 compliant....

 

Would it be safe to pour Castrol 5W-30 VW 507 00 for now.

 

Also, what would you guys recommend for my upcoming oil change?

Shell Helix Ultra ECT 5W 30 is the oil for you I reckon.

If you go to erWin Skoda and register an account (free to do so), on the right hand side of the home page there is a link to a current list of approved oils, select one from the 50400/50700 list and you'll be fine.  About 95% are 5W30, the remainder 0W30, from what I can see at a quick glance. 

The only kind of Shell 5w-30 oil I can get my hands on is ECT C3 which is not for vw 507 00... I also suppose I need the simple ECT but what do you do if say they don't make it or sell it in your area anymore?

Many retailers seem to mix the Shell ECT oil with the Shell ECT C3 oil which have totaly different specs...

Most online shops have a picture of the simple ECT but when you look into the specs, you can clearly see its infact the ECT C3...

Go for oil that meets 507.00 5/30w for variable service or 505.01 5/40w for fixed service. These vag oil specs are important as they protect your pd cams from premature wear.

Vw504/507 oil with 5w 30 weight will do for top ups, be it Shell, castrol, whatever. If you can get hold of it Mobil 1 ESP 5w 30 meets the required VW specifications and weight.

What about the shell vw 507 00, 0w-30? This one seems to be much easier o find. Would it be alright to swap to this whe I do the change? There's nothing in the owners manual about viscosity and I guess it is all down to the climate you are living in. Am I right?

As long as it complies with VW507 then there shouldn't be any issues. The only problem I forsee is you'll probably burn i a little faster due to the thinner viscosity, but then again it's a thinner oil (at lower temperatures) so on start up from cold it'll get to where it needs to be a bit quicker.

0w30 would be fine. At operating temp. it's still a '30' weight oil. As above the '0' means that from a cold start it will get round the engine that little bit faster than a '5' or '10' would.

 

Personally I've only used Mobil 1 ESP 5w30 since owning this VRs but I would have no qualms about using a 0w30.

The only viscosity I've ever seen in 507.00 is 5w-30 but maybe it's different where you live.

 

VW spec is more important than viscosity.

 

Yes, you can mix engine oils.

 

Yes you can top up with castrol or Mobil  or whatever you please - as long as it meets the VW spec for your engine.  You can even mix 506.01 with 507.00.

I will go for a Castrol bottle to top up for now an then I might look into ordering the Shell from somewhere else. Apparently all vw 507 00 Shell oils on Ebay UK are 0w-30...

No point spending extra on shell or castrol oils. Quantum works just fine and is cheaper, just make sure you get it from reputable seller (as with every other oil).

Not sure Ebay UK will ship to Denmark with any reasonable cost. And Denmark doesn't have an Ebay anyway.

Rang Tps and asked them after someone from Vw mentioned it. Same spec and made by Castrol for Vw

@dara85  - Sorry about the late reply.

I have only got the car for 2 months now so I can't tell you for sure but I had to top up with 0.5 liters until it got back to the B range. I am 1700 km away from service.

 

@rustynuts - EbayUK does ship to Denmark but often for a hefty price. I have found an online retailer in the meantime who apparently has the Shell oil I need. I am willing to stick to Shell because the car has been on Shell for its entire life and for the 230.000 km it has, the engine sounds great. 

Yep, I know it's expensive shipping to Denmark. I've sent a few bits and pieces over to a friend of mine over there near København, which reminds me I must drop him a line.

I've not been over to Denmark since 2014 when the ferry ended between Harwich & Esbjerg. Hoping they can manage to reinstate the ferry again...
