OEM Towbar retrofit

Featured Replies

I have a few question regarding the original tow bar for the new Superb I hope you can help with. I want to fit it so I am searching for the different parts around the net.

1. What is the part number of the part with the handle and led indicator that will replace the original trim in the car?

2. I found these two towbars, but I can't find the difference - do they both work for my car?

3V9 803 881 A

3V9 092 160 A

3. Which electric set do I need? I have found these two:

3V0 055 204

3V0 971 541

My car is a 2015/11 Superb Combi 3 L&K 190 DSG. VIN TMBJJ9NP0G7020391. It is not prepared for tow bar.

Can anyone help with these questions?

Thanks!

I don't think you'll be able to fully retrofit to the same standard as the factory fitted one IMO.

afraid i cannot comment on the trim or led question, but i did fit my MY2016 SE-L with an aftermarket removable Bosal towbar - with Westfalia electrics. i had no factory wiring. THe wiring i used was https://www.pfjones.co.uk/skoda-superb-towbar-wiring-kit-13-pin-2015-onwards-305408300113.html,

the job took me about 3 hours to fit the towbar, but the wiring took about 7-8 hours. the fitting knocked my adaptive cruise control out, so i couldn't recalibrate that myself, so that cost me c.£250 to get that sorted.

the towbar coding was easy, but i spent hours trying to get the cruise control working again without sucess. even vagcom couldn't get it working so it had to be recalibrated.

in all, i reckon i spent over 40 hours coding, recoding to get it all to work in harmony.

the wiring into the existing loom is an absolute pig as you have to disconnect certain wires from the connecting blocks to piggy back off of.

i was quoted c.£1000 to have a dealer fit.

i probably spent around £600 on parts plus vcds, plus another £250 for the cruise recalibration.

in hindsight, if i knew the time it would take, i'd have spent £1000 getting the dealer fit, or an indy to do it for c.£600.

An indy i later spoke with said the wiring is one of the worst hes come across.

i'd never try this again after the time hassle involved.

sorry i cannot answer the question on the trim/led, but hope the above experience gives you a bit of foresight on the problems i encountered and unless you're an expert in the subject it might be worth passing it to a specialist totake the hassle away.

Been outside and got you some photos...   Second photo has the part number for the handle you pull to release the towbar - part number - 3V9 803 847  (it could however just be the part number for the plastic trim)

hope this helps.

As a side note - i would just go for an aftermarket option.

This is not the first time I hear about problem with the ACC after fitting the towbar. I think my plan is to find the parts I need on ebay. I can get them for about half price there. Then I will fit the bar and run the wires to the front of the car and have my friend do the last part.

Unless your friend is Harry Potter, you still need to visit Skoda to get your ACC recalibrated. As I mentioned on Vagcars, I would still sugest going for the Westfalia solution.

I bought the towbar for 275£-ish including OEM electronics and wiring, and I paid 275£-ish to get my Skoda dealer to fit and code it. My car was without prep.

Thanks Rick. That was very helpful! I think the part number is just for the handle, and not the whole panel. It is number 9 on this picture

851867850.png

In addition, a special version of number 5 is needed.

And to answer some of my own questions from my first post:

2: 3V9 092 160 A is the kit that is needed. It includes the towbar and the wiring to the luggage compartment. 3V9 803 881 A is the bar itself, which is a part of the kit.

3: 3V0 055 204 is the electric kit that runs from the front of the car to the control unit in the luggage compartment. The other part I mentioned (3V0 971 541) are the cables that runs from the towbar to the luggage compartment. This is also included in the towbar kit 3V9 092 160 A.

So if you do not have the towbar preperation, you will need 3V9 092 160 A and 3V0 055 204. In addition to this the trim panel (part number ???) with the handle (handle = 3V9 803 847). And then a control unit ( part number ???)

Correct me if i'm wrong or if anyone has any additional information about the "missing" parts  :notme:

rear bumper removal is a doddle. few screws around the rear of the rear wheelarch, and inside boot (from memory), then easily lifts off.

hardest bit is the wiring - took me hours to do as its so fiddly, in particularly connecting to the wiring loom under the glovebox.

secondly, I had to remove the Adblue tank to fit my towbar - which is a PITA if you've just refilled it as its bloody heavy to hold/suspend whilst doing up/removing the bolts.good luck with it.

Ok so I collected the parts today and have a few questions 1 how do the rear seats remove ?  and where is the BCM ?

regards all Terry

On a LHD the BCM is behind the fusebox in the drivers side. My best guess is, that it´s located behind the glovebox on a RHD. You don´t need to remove the rear seat, just the "cushion" part of the backrest towards the passenger side door.

Hi and many thanks for the reply this is a Mk3 car and to remove the above you need to take the base of the back seat out as there is a nut fixing the side cushion under the rear seat...

To remove the back seat base you lift the 2 front edges so the front wire fixings come out there holes then push the seat back towards the boot to unhook the rear fixings then up and out..

Regards Terry

right then I have now fitted the towbar and installed the Trailer prep elect's I had to disconnect the battery and passenger air bag. on re connecting the battery I have some errors.

1 Airbag error.

2 Hill hold error

3 Tyre pressure error all 4

4 Park assist error

5 Stability error

do these have to be reset at skoda or can they be done by me ???

Regards Terry

Can anyone help with instruction for removing parts 1 and 2 (to get to the preinstalled tow bar wired connectors)

Edited by eeghie

Got mine booked in at Skoda dealer for electric tow bar Retro fitting (ie, the proper Skoda one with the release handle and electronic integration etc). They want the car for 2 days, quoted £1200 to fit. Let me know if you would like me to ask any questions when I drop it off and I'll post back on here

well almost everything is working a quick spin sorted out most. I still have front assist not available  so no CC either. I booked it in to my local skoda to have the Trailer enabled and after an hour they said there was an error installing it so they have raised a tec question. They think the elects can't be used on my version of Superb !!

I have spoken to a local towbar fitter and he said that if all your lights are working it has been connected correctly and he can sort out the programming for me.

I would really like to have the skoda software installed though as the little LED in the boot does not work at the moment...

Regards Terry

Yes if you could ask them what or where they get the code from to activate the towbar software as i can point me local dealers in the right direction

They need to:

- Run the activation code supplied on the ETKA PARTS CATALOGUE via ODIS

- Exit ODIS then reconnect to the car (the car should now recognise the newly installed unit)

- Run the code, calibrate and parameterise option for address 69 (towing electrics) on Software version management

- Erase all faults

- Exit ODIS

- Test the tow bar using the correct board

Hi!

I’m working to retrofit the towbar as well (car is without prep), and I’m puzzled to find the connection F121 in the fusebox....

maybe I’m going blind, but honestly could not locate it.

hope anyone here will be able to help out!!!

thanks

Hello. The F121 is located on the backside if the fuse box in the lozer corner-just red cable with white plastic cover which you have to plug to cable from tha preparation kit.it is very hard to put it into the place withou pulling fuse box downwards(remove the 4fuses in the corners and pul it down, than the access is a lot better).

Can I revive this post?
I'm interested in the wiring loom also. Not sure about the correct code.

Got myself a towbar (the swiveling kind) ..fitted in

bought a towbar computer (5q0 907 383H) from a crashed superb 3

I need to know what code should I buy for the wiring loom from the control unit to the fusebox
