Driving in freezing fog for 1st time

Featured Replies

Hey guys, just thought I would share my experiences last Sunday morning with you.

I drove back from Mid Wales to London at 6am in freezing fog and what an experience it was. I could see just a few metres in front of the car at times and the fog was so cold when I got out at Oxford for a coffee the front grill on my Fabia vRS was covered in solid icicles which were also on my mirrors but obviously not ones that hang downwards, these where flowing backwards from the direction of travel. I wish I had taken a photo now.

I've driven in fog before but not like this. Full beam seemed to have no effect at all and I had to stick to low beam to see the white line on the road which I think is normal practice for fog but this was so much worse.

At Oxford when the countryside opens up on the M40 the sun came up and everything was crystal clear all of a sudden. Driving into the rising sun all the ice started to melt on the car and was shooting up the bonnet and hitting the windscreen, I felt a bit like I was in a space shuttle re entering the atmosphere what with the bright sun coming up ahead and the ice shooting up the screen. :) Great fun and no i've not been eating space cakes, honest gov. :)

Jifster, you'll find that Main beam will 'light up' the water vapour in fog, that's why you use your fog lamps ;) Would have liked to have seen that ice though. (tough keeping your eye on the road at 80mph though and holding your camera phone at the same time eh ? :D

did it look anything like this

Ah, I knew it was something like that, water vapour and all that. Talking of camera phones I know someone that was testing the camera on their Nokia N70 while driving across the severn bridge the other day. Not as bad as it sounds though as it was very quiet.
