Clunky gear change....

Featured Replies

I am not sure if it's me or the car but the gear change is clunky mainly between first and second. The gears are not grinding but there is a definite noise from the gear stick. Is it something that needs further investigation or is it nothing to worry about. Thanks!

Does it do it when its warm, not just up to engine temp but realy hot. The 1 to 2nd is normaly referred to as cold crunch, basicaly the gear oil is not up to temp. Mine does it when cold its a charicteristic of the gear box, i have asked loads of people with vag cars with the same 6 speed box and mostly thay all do it. There are several theorys, one of the most likly are the bigger syncro rings used and the oil viscosity when not warmed up.

If the symptems are still there when hot its eather selector alignment or knackard syncros. But i doubt the latter if its a newish car.

Quite common on the manual six speed boxes, and it get's worse in the cold weather. It can also be hard to get reverse to fully engage on some mornings. All you can do is make sure you push the clutch all the way to the floor to make sure there is no clutch drag. For piece of mind I can tell you, those gearboxes are near bullet proof.

Am still getting this, even though the weather is a bit warmer now.Took it to main dealer ( still under warranty) and they said they couldn't find anything amiss, which either points to my crap driving or it's nothing! The car is a '15' plate and done @16000 miles, so to me should be a very smooth change.Again its irritating that it doesn't feel right!

Tell me about this, i am in exactaly the same boat and took mine back 3 times. The answer i get is the all like this, one garage discribed it as a positive shift, *******s. I have a theory is to why this is, i think if you look at all the gearboxes made i think all the good ones go to audi, vw then all the others that are poor tolrence go to skoda then seat.

Its bloody horrific 1 to 2nd shift one of the worst i have experenced and spoils the driving experence. It takes ages to heat the gearbox up. After the car has been run for a few hours its fine.  I think it has somthing to do with the overly big syncros used on 1st and 2nd. This is commonly refered to as cold crunch.

As soon as you try and pull away to get out of a junction 2nd clangs in, baulks, it sounds awful.  So in order to get round this you have to put second in realy slowly, ridiculously slowly.

Hi Martskoda, Alpha2110,

I started another thread on this the other day (see below)

My gear change from 1st to 2nd has been notchy/clunky since about June last year had it back at the garage and each time no fault could be found. I noticed a very small patch of oil on my driveway. It was in the garage today and there is oil leaking from the gearbox. I have taken out an extended warranty will know tomorrow what the next steps are and update accordingly

https://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/424827-gearbox-oil-leak-notchy-gears/

Mine has only done 12k and is 12 months old, i thought after a week of buying it there was somthing wrong, unfortunatly i did not pick this up when a bought the car, i test drove a 2014 version that was fine. I have looked into loads of posible issues and had no sucsess with 2 dealers.

There is even two types of synth oil for this, one is for cold climates, this is a legit vw oil for this box. However i would imagine it has increased wear rate.

The gearbox is my biggest issue with the car, that followed by the booming and over presure. Oh and road noise.

They aren't the smoothest change, the mechanism makes a lot of clunking noises.

Mines at 7k miles, some days it's great others not so.

I'll be going DSG next time, my driving is semi urban with too much stop start, so changing gear becomes a chore.

I am still getting this clunky noise when changing from 1st to second! It's doesn't matter how I adjust the seat, I still don't get a smooth change, as I thought it might be my driving position. Its really irritating! As I said previously the main dealer says it's fine and nothing wrong! Any ideas!?

i am quite fed up with my 6 speed manual gearbox. 1.6 TDI. fairly new car less than a year old. 26000 KM done.

almost everyday when i do reverse, it grinds into gear. it grinds like 1 out of 4 times. i am sure i did full clutch in.

doesnt matter if i engage the gear fast or slow. it still grinds.

sometimes i go into 2nd gear before engaging reverse. but it could still grind at times even if it's done that way. what's next?

If its grinding in reverse it sounds like you have a clutch problem, especially if your putting it into another gear first which effectively stops the gearbox from turning.

And i'd also like to add my 6 speed manual in my Superb is rubbish also, third seems to be the worst for notchyness, 4,5,6 are all fine. I am wondering if it will get better with age because I've had 1 Seat, 1 Audi and 3 Vw's previous to this car all with high-ish mileage and they have all been sweet as a nut and had silky smooth gearboxes

I suspect there are many reasons for this, cynical tho some of them are. I think gearboxes with poor tolrences are used in skoda and seat. Its a strong box however its a cable operated box and are more prone to mis alignment issues. This is in addition to my posts above. The gear box needs to be at full operating temp for the problem to go alot longer than the engine water temprature to reach normal.

This could be a cable linkage alignment issue, get the garage to realign the linkage. I would get this sorted while it's under warrenty.

Car doesn't come with warranty. I am not in Europe. All forward gears do not grind. Once in a while it is hard to engage gear 1 or 2.

For reverse gear, it grinds. So does this mean the clutch is not fully disengaged?

Or what about reverse gear doesn't come with a synchro mesh? Does it apply to this problem?

I've just fitted a powerflex insert to my dogbone mount and its helped massively with 1st to 2nd gear change, no jerkiness or clunking.

My Octavia has just done over 2200 miles (!) and has a clunky change but it is the action of the change rather than movement of the cogs! I am not duly worried. Feels like the car will last for ever. I love it!

Part number/link to it?

I did a similar thing on my Saab - with a powerflex part - and it also helped a lot.

i have a MQ250 gearbox. intending to change the gear oil, and would like to know how much gear oil is needed for the 1.6 TDI octavia 3? thanks in advance.

I am still not happy with my gear change between first and second has anybody changed the oil if so has it made a difference.

I have noticed the following when I start the car from cold gear change is notchy between 1st and 2nd. When I park the car and go back while the car is still warm then the gear change is a lot smoother. Does anybody reckon its worthwhile changing the oil.

Strange this. Not helpful I know, but my 2014 VRS gearchange is like a knife through butter.

I wonder if anyone knows if there's an option to do a 'linkage reset' like on the Mk. 1'S?

Just been out car fully heated up gear change notchy left the car for about an hour gear change was as smooth as silk.  My gut instinct is to replace gearbox oil.

I would be interested to hear the results if you chainge the oil. Mine behaves the same as yours. Its a common problem and affects all vag varients that use this gear box.

Mine is very slowly improving and at the current rate when its done 100k it should have fixed its self.

Hi to everyone, am new to this forum and new to Skoda.

I thought I would add to this old thread to keep things all in one place to help future searchers with the same problem

I picked up a MK3 VRS TDI on Saturday with 22K on the clock and the last couple of days and with the weather being cold 1st thing on my way to work there is a very notchy change on 1 to 4 and particularly a slight crunch between 1st and second. I have contacted the garage I bought it from (just to bring it to their attention)  but just thinkthey will have it in a couple of days and declare its normal blah! blah! and I could do without the tame wasting stress to be honest

I think I will have it looked at by my local VAG indy when I take it for the next big service. Does anyone have a view whether its an adjustment issue or a premature wear issue please?

Cheers

Alan
