fob buttons work to lock/unlock door, but not the key

Featured Replies

Hi. First post here. I've been trying to google this problem, but the results I get are the opposite of what I experience.

First of all: I got a octy z1 2005 mki, bought second hand earlier this year.

The problem I have is that the mechanical key hole doesn't turn. I can hear the pins go into position when I insert the key. I've tried to spray it with WD 40, but the only thing that happened was that the key went in a bit smoother. I still can't turn the cylinder to unlock.

backstory for those interested:

I had to remove my battery a couple of weeks ago to charge it, and it was pretty much straight forward. BUT I what I didn't think of is that the car locks the doors automatically after a minute or so if the key is not in the ignition. Well, I opened the hood, closed the door, removed the battery, and slammed the hood down. Then I was going to put my toolbox back in the car, and well, it was locked.

No problem, I'll just use the key on the fob, right? Didn't work, so I had to get a car rescue company help me get the hood back up. They also tried to help me fix the mechanical lock, but with no luck.

Why I want it fixed:

If the battery on the fob or the car should ever die on me again, I don't want to run into the same issue. I live in Norway, and batteries don't like our winters... Does anybody have any ideas on how I can get the mechanical lock to turn?

TL;DR:

Removed the car battery, slammed hood, realized car was locked, mechanical key didn't work. Don't want it to happen again.

Any answers, or links to posts I might have missed, would be much appreciated :)

The key should operate the drivers door lock. If it isn't then you don't need me to tell you that it is broken  :D

If you bought the car second-hand I wonder if the drivers door handle and locking mechanism has been replaced before? Perhaps the car was broken into and the original lock was damaged? The previous owner only ever locked and unlocked the car using the key-fob so didn't bother going to the expense of having a new lock made up to fit the car and instead used one from a scrap car?

Assuming the key can be used to start the engine then it is fair to assume it is the correct key for the car.

Was the car supplied with two keys? If so does the second key work in the door lock?

As long as the car can be locked and unlocked via the key fob I don't think I'd be paying out money for a new lock, I'd rather carry a spare battery for the key-fob, or invest in a second (spare) key instead.
