Tyres - Inside Edge

Featured Replies

Hi guys

In August I purchased my Superb and I fitted 4 Uniroyal Rainsport 3's in September. (Rears had perished and fronts were borderline legal)

I check my tyres quite frequently as I am a taxi driver and they are the 4 things keeping me stuck to the road, plus I like to monitor the wear.

I've been happy with how the tyres have worn, in terms of length of time on the car and mileage, but I've got one rather huge concern!

The inside edge has worn rather badly and on Saturday night, with customer on board I got a flat. On further inspection, the cords were showing.

I had been warned by another driver about this, so I was monitoring the insides in terms of wear, but it's just happened so fast. I can only blame myself as I'd checked my tyre pressures only 30 minutes before and hadn't checked the condition as I was due to take the wheels off for winter protection.

My concern is, once fitted does my car need a full Geometry setup or just tracking. AND what pressures do you guys run?

this has caught me out a few times , these cars seem to be prone to it on the rear , geometry was ok as well

Mine has gone on the fronts...although I shall be checking the rears again now you've said that

Had the same on mine, and like you I like to think I check my car and make sure it's as it should be but this caught me out. Mine deflated after it wore right through. I now pay particular attention to the inner edges of the rear tyres, the first warning seems to be a droning as if a wheel bearing has gone.

Has your rim cracked?

Has your rim cracked?

No. It was just some wet brake dust that had got wet and begun to run.

It looks really bad!

I had the same issue on the fronts. As you note you have to keep an eye on the inner edges, which is difficult from the side. When I park outside I turn the wheels to full lock to remind me to check them!

36-38PSI is what I run now, so keeping an eye on wear in the centre in case of over inflation.

Lastly, there is some good information in the link above about alignment.

Have had my mk2 cr 170 Elegance Estate for 2 years. 40k mixed mikes. Fabulous drive for this 70 year but had the same difficulty with front tyre circumferential splitting at inner edge which caught me out with a failed MoT last year.

Tyres were premium Goodyear Efficientgrip Performance and had only managed 8k miles before failing.

Talked the problem over with local taxi driving lads and trusted tyre agents (no knowledge of the issue at local Skoda main dealer claimed).

Decided on structured improvement programme.

4-wheel alignment revealed one rear wheel slightly out of spec. Marginal adjustments made to in spec. wheels to reduce inner edge wear.

Tyres replaced with 225/45/18 w XL. Insurance company content as this was for reasons of safety improvement. Pressures increased to 34 psi all round. Comfort improved significantly with no noticeable effect on performance.

Presently mileage 20k with estimated 5k more to come on fronts. Downside is cost of the new tyres at more than £150 per corner, up by 40%. Will look for mid-range tyre next time. Maybe Falken?

Tyre pressures are very sensitive to ambient temperature. 32 psi in Summer can easily subside to 29 psi in U.K. Winter and it is here that these troubles get magnified very quickly imo!

I think I'm on the right track. This car is worth the effort!

Uae Nitrogen instead of the air :)

Use hydrogen and a match in the valve. That will solve any drone and give us a shocking air suspension.

The last time I saw inside edge wear like the photos above, the vehicle in question had worn bottom ball joints.

I've got 3 superbs and it happens on them all, there must be some sort of geometry irregularity , every time I've had the 4 wheel tracking checked with the fancy laser equipment and all has been ok . I use the same tyres on my mondeos and never have this problem , they wear evenly until they are on the legal limit all over

I thankfully never experienced this on my Twindoor 1.8TSI. I did however on my TDI Octavia II. It almost needed constant realignment to keep the tyres in tip top condition.

I had virtually the same wear on mine as well.

I don't understand ?!?! With this kind of damage - the very early stage would be noticeable - shaking of the steering wheel and noise.

I have stone in the tread and I'll notice it immediately.

In my case it was the rear tyres, no vibrations whatsoever, but as they gradually wear a bit like the shape of a 50 pence coin on the inner edges they do begin to drone a bit, but as the wear rate is so slow its very easy to not notice it, and it's only when you get new tyres put on you realise they had become noisy over a period of time.

I had exactly the same issue on a previous Passat B6 and a Passat CC, seems to be something to do with the way VW group set the geometry up. Maybe the geometry settings are a bit to wide, and if on or near the upper or lower limit you get this problem. In all cases the dealers have said everything is within tolerance.

As you can see from peterposh photos the tyres wear the same as mine, bald patches all around the circumference at fairly regular intervals, with tread left between each bald section. Strange.

Well, I guess I've been lucky and there doesn't seem to be much in the way of poor wear on the inner edges of my tyres. However, I'm broke and after reading generally good reviews on the, I shoved on a pair of Infinity Ecomax on the fronts via Asda Tyres. All I can say is I'm delighted with them, in the dry and wet and they're very quiet too. In contrast, the Vredesteins they replaced were good in the dry, but very noisy and skittish in the wet. The sidewalls also cracked badly and given they'd only covered 6k, I moaned at Vredestein..... a lot....and they finally gave me a "shut-up please" gesture payment, but right now, I plan on shoving another pair of the Infinitys on the back when the time comes.

I'm glad I'm not the only one with this issue

Mine was the rear tyres as well.

I'll check mine again next week ;) done 13k miles and it looks like I should do another 5k - when swapped front-back ;) my local friendly tyres service checked them about month ago and found no problems at all.

I'm always checking the tyres  as well so this was quite embarrassing not to mention dangerous  , it's caught me out twice now. They seem to go quickly when they do. Starts out as a quiet  drone like wheel bearing

My Superb's  rear tyres appeared to scrub the inner edge more when I carried loads of people and luggage through France this year. Can;t complain though as when I swapped the wheels /tyres for my winters last month the summers had done about 35k miles.

The dealer mentioned that it's a feature of the suspension design of the Superb II
