Cant fill petrol tank fully

Featured Replies

The past 2 times when I have filled up my car, the pump has clicked before the tank is full. Usually its around 3/4 full and it will not fill anymore unless i keep repeatedly pulling the lever on the pump.

Car is a 1.2 petrol

Any suggestions?

Does your range to next fill suggest 3/4 full or more like 9/10?

well the gauge shows 3/4 and the money im putting in suggests 3/4.

Different station, or even pump, to your usual?

same petrol station i usually use but different pumps and has happened both times

It could be a faster pump flow rate triggering the pump cut-off sooner. Try holding the trigger at about half flow.

Because you might not know how to use a petrol pump yet, amirite?

Some people really don't. I've filled my car (ok diesel) up, and then watched the next person try to fill their's up without touching the pistol because I did.

Low spec Fabias don't have a range display.

I will try it using half flow next time, but I'm fairly sure that i tried it last time and it still clicked.

Oh and my fabia does have a trip computer with range etc, and this was indicating what it should be for 3/4 tank.

Thanks for your responses so far

Yeah, the only reasons I can see why your tank won't fill past 3/4 are higher flow rate from the pump triggering its pressure cutoff sooner, or your tank's pressure relief being stuck closed with similar effect at full pump flow. Fully investigating the pump cutoff theory takes longer, but is both cheaper (like in free) and safer.

Just been to fill up again at a different station and it started doing the same thing once the tank got to about 3/4 level.

I left it for  a bit and carried on and it worked, I've never been able to put that much fuel in the car since i bought it!!

Must have been a problem for a while as even though the dashboard gauge usually shows full, the tank clearly has another 18 quid worth of fuel to fit in.

Not sure what the issue is but it seems just doing it slowly works better.

Not as such -it's a guestimate of driving over last 50 miles given in miles. Can't you use the figure you'd get ( possibly need to average it out) and then use what car now tells you to see if things are well . ( e.g - on a full tank, mine says something like 490miles ,so for 3/4 tank I'd expect 360 ).

tried filling with the pressure relief valve click n refill method to let some air out? Not advisable if petrol and certainly not advisable if petrol in summer.
