Service and log book advice

Featured Replies

Hello,

Have recently bought a 1.4 petrol manual Octavia estate 63 plate but registered 2014. The MOT is due next month.

I don't have a log book - although bought from a skoda dealer so assumed that log books are a bit retro and details are all online. Should I have a physical log book?

Also is there anywhere to find out what skoda reccomends to be serviced and at what timescale and mileage (the advantages of a log book perhaps?). My car has 10k miles on the clock and will be three years old in Feb. I won't do more than 7k a year.

I don't particularly want to use a skoda dealer for the service as have a trustworthy independent garage near where I live. Is this naive on my part? I'm a bit in awe of the electronic sophistication of the vehicle (my last car was a 11 year old Citroen so please don't laugh) and wondered if it needs some specialist hook up to service it.

Thanks

Do you mean that you do not have a Log Book as in the V5 regustration document or tgat yoh do nit have the service schedule book?

The former is a legal document which you should have but I understand that the latter has been phased out. I have one for my 2012 MkII but services are recorded electronically at Skoda dealers.

You should be able to download the service schedule from Skoda's website. The period between servicing will depend on whether your car is on fixed of variable schedule.

What do you mean by "log book"? Do you mean a Service/Maintenance Book or a V5 (the equivalent of which my Dad always used to call the Log Book)?

Service history is all online now, the dealer is supposed to update it when they do a service (although I'm still waiting for Sparshatts to add the service they did on my Octavia in November 2016 so the system isn't flawless). It has been mentioned that you can get a paper version for e.g. indies to use when they do a service outside of the dealer network but I've never seen any details such as part number.

Thanks. I have the v5 reg doc. I don't have a service book which tells me what needs doing and when and which a mechanic would stamp. I understand this to be electronic but that feels like I can't access the knowledge about the vehicle I need. I'm wondering how this would work if I use an independent garage - how they would access and update my cars record?

Skoda stopped providing service books at least 3 years ago. I don't any mkIII ever came with one.

Until a recent update of the MySkoda iPhone app the PDI (Pre-Delivery Inspection) service for my Octavia appeared in the App, but the service done in November 2016 didn't - but now there is no service history in the app.

Neither can I find a link to access the service history on the Skoda UK website.

So how is an owner (or potential purchaser) supposed to get access to the service history?

Got my car Nov16 as an approved dealer car and put the my skoda app on my phone it shows the pdi inspection and first service in 2015 but no service data for Nov16 when i bought it with 13k miles on. So I emailed skoda uk they replied with the service info for when it was serviced when i bought it. They could do with having a service portal online so you can keep track of it all.

Keep all the receipts, they are still provided as usual. I much prefer receipts rather than book stamps anyway as service books can be easily forged.

Thnaks. I downloaded the app and the service schedule is there as you would hope as bought from a dealer. It says it was serviced during in October - I guess a check before putting it up for second hand sale - I bought it November. Perhaps I don't need to service it - just get the MOT. Any advice folks?

The mystery of what needs doing and when is still unresolved. Resent this being privileged knowledge!

Early ones did. My 63 plate from Oct 13 has one.

Hi and welcome Luther.

Most of the info is here:

http://www.skoda.co.uk/owners/service-and-maintenance/simply-fixed/default/

They are either on fixed servicing, annually or 10k miles......or variable servicing approx every 18k miles when the car displays the symbols.

Have a look on the CAR menu also, there is a service page showing how many miles days to the next one.

There are minor and major services and they alternate. Brake fluid change every 3 years approx £50.

Cambelt is long life, 10yrs 100k miles I believe.

As these are turbo engines I recommend annual oil changes to keep the turbo healthy.

Today I asked the dealer where I bought my Octavia (Sparshatts of Botley) why the service history online is only accessible to dealers and here's their (b*llsh*t IMHO reply):

Unfortunately it’s all due to data protection and therefore a procedure they have to follow to adhere to government legislation.

I pointed out that the owner of the vehicle pays for the servicing, either via a Service Plan or at the time of the service, so there is no data protection issue as the information is purchased by, and hence owned by, the vehicle owner. This drew no response other than to suggest that I can purchase a service  book and they will back date the entries in it for me:

If you would prefer to have a service book and us back date this for you so that you have a service book going forward as well as your digital service history, you can opt to purchase one from any parts department at a Skoda Dealership.

I love the muddled thinking in this offer where the dealer refers to "your digital service history" but denies me access to it because of "data protection" :swear:

They did, my old 63 plate vRS came with one.

I landed on this page because my third Octavia, just a year old, is telling me it needs its first (oil change) service and I find that there is no service book in the car.  The dealer I bought it from, some distance away, confirms that service records are now kept on line.  However, after a bit of searching, it seems that only Skoda dealers can access the system, so when I get my local independent garage to do the work, it's not going to be recorded.  I have just ordered a "Skoda" service book on Amazon, so I am going to have my own stamped book, plus obviously receipts of servicing carried out.  Seems like another VAG scam to me, but after the emissions fraud, I guess it's fairly insignificant.  This will be my last VAG car...

When I queried the dealer I bought my Skoda from why only dealers can access the data I was told it's because of "Data Protection" and they didn't reply when I pointed out that as it is data relating to a car that I own (not the dealer) then ergo the data is mine, so there cannot be a "Data Protection" issue.

The iPhone App is SUPPOSED to be able to access the service data, mine did briefly for a few days, but then reverted back to only showing the initial PDI.

BTW AFAIK all car manufacturers are switching to online service records, so going away from VAG won't solve this issue...

Well useful to learn that I won't be getting a service book with my new O3 before I'm 90 miles up the road from the supplying dealer,

Yes, good point on all manufacturers doing online service records. However, VAG fraud on emissions plus too many other "Simply Stupid" things on my latest Octavia mean it will be a different make next time for me.

Myskoda app seems to work and does record the service data.

Is there an Android app that shows service history?  I can see MySkoda but it appears to be in French?

Myskoda is indeed an Android app and the one I downloaded is in English.

I'd also like to know how a non-franchised garage can add a properly carried out service to a service record. And enable it to be integrated with the Skoda service record.

Annoyance with Skoda service record.....

  • 4 weeks later...

I've got my new O3 now and have loaded MySkoda from the QR code in the handbook.

You can see indeed the service record in there (just the PDI for me) and export to a pdf that you could provide if selling the car.

Of course it will only reflect Skoda (or at least VW group maybe) dealers servicing.

Here is the QR code for the app.
