Incorrect vehicle information on V5?

Featured Replies

Something that I spotted when purchasing my car (Mk3 vRS TDI) from Skoda was that the V5 (and usual car check apps) show it as a 2 door saloon, when infact it is the 5 door estate. I did complete all of the relevant checks when purchasing, including physical VIN checks against documents with everything in order.

A typo by Skoda when registering? or something to be concerned about?

Or a typo by the dvla?

I would raise it with them.. could end up being an issue down the line if you have a claim/nip etc...

I'd also raise this, knowing Skoda they will try to refuse Warranty work as you have had the car modified by adding the extra 3 doors   :wait:

... and the DVLA will demand that you have the car put through SVA as a result of said modifications. ;)

Highly unlikely since the SVA was replaced by the IVA 8 years ago. But know what you mean.

Have the supplying dealer that first registered the car sort it out, but since that will probably be hopeless contact the DVLA, they are sorted out a lot more these days.

Just slightly incompetent not totally useless anymore.

The DVLA database has approximately 3 million errors on it..........

I had this with my Superb, registered as a saloon, when it was an estate, if I remember rightly had to fill in a form and send a photo clearly showing the registration plate and the Dvla sent a revised V5. My concern was if I made an insurance claim there would be an issue.

Very valid point. We have seen engine code errors before as well, best one was it was registered as a 1200cc, but was actually a 1600cc - can't remember the car now, but it may have impacted on the VED as it was a 00's model.

It appears that this issue was more common than I first thought. I have done a letter to DVLA, enclosing my V5C and will await their reply/request for evidence etc.

I had this issue on my wife's 16 year old Yaris.

Before Christmas I decided it was time that it had a complete set of new front wipers (arms and blades). I tried everywhere to get a set of non-OEM ones but whilst the rear one was available everywhere, I found it impossible to to source the front ones anywhere.

I bit the bullet and phoned a local Toyota main dealer. The first thing they asked for was the VIN number. I went to the V5 and read it to them but it didn't compute, apparently having one too few characters. After much work on the plate in the engine compartment I deciphered the number (which had suffered 16 years of exposure) and it transpired whoever had transferred the number from the car to the DVLA had missed a character off.

I phoned the DVLA and their response was "just fill in the change section in the V5 with the right number and send it back to us and we'll issue a new V5 with the right number". I asked if any verification was required to which the answer was "no". I therefore did as requested and about a week later I received the new V5 with correct number.

In light of this I just wonder how easy it would be to put false info into a V5 for any number of nefarious reasons.

How old is the Car? Part of the MoT now includes checking the vehicle against the dvla database and correcting any errors.

I owned an MX5 which stated on the V5 a 4 seater. I only noticed this error when I sold it.

Also another MX5 the one I own currently said on the MOT history check site it had an MOT in 2009 when it's a 2007 model. When I further went through the MOT check dates it said it failed because of the lack of a rear fog light, it was missing completely.

Turns out they had mixed up the details of my car with the 4 seater MX5 above, that was an import and nine years older than the current one. Turns out they had messed up when doing a reg transfer, I transferred a personal reg over. I'd got half the MOT history of a 98 model and the rest on a 2007 model.

They did sort it all out for me with a couple of emails. So do check the docs when you buy a new or used car, you never know.

Late 2013, so it has had one MOT.

My five door ibiza was down on the v5 as a three door, sent the v5 off with the section amended to say five door, got sent another v5, that still said three door. Didn't bother trying again.

Late 2013, so it has had one MOT.

My old car had the vin wrong on the v5 and it was picked up and corrected during the MoT.
