Skoda Superb "kangarooing"

Featured Replies

Only just found this forum and trust this question is posted in the correct section and makes sense!

Car is a 2011 (11) Skoda Superb Estate Elegance 1.8 TSI 160 PS DSG bought by me from new. Mileage now only 20,000 miles.

Serviced at a Skoda garage until the end of 2016. Now done by my local garage - run by chaps of the old school.

A few weeks ago the car began to (what I can only describe as) "kangarooing". It would start fine and I would drive a few miles before dropping off my wife. The engine was left ticking over while I helped her out but, as soon as I went to pull away no movement of the car took place. Then, all of a sudden, it would jump forward (or back) with a slight squeal of the tyres. This was c clearly very disconcerting when trying to turn around in a small car park such as in our local Physiotherapy Clinic.

When this happened it took several back and forth movements turn round with a need to be ready with the brakes to avoid hitting other parked cars. Having parked up, I left the engine ticking over until my wife came out and it then pulled away perfectly. Having got home I cut the engine before, a few minutes later, decided to turn the car around. Having started the engine (first turn of the key) gentle application of the throttle led to the car immediately started "jumping" whether in forward or reverse. Once parked up, I did nothing until next day when it behaved perfectly normally throughout a start stop day.

Prior to the events described above, my local garage put it on their diagnostic equipment which revealed no significant errors but they reset all parameters and it seemed to have cured the problem. Two days later it went back to being a problem pulling away - potentially quite dangerous if pulling out into a street full of parked parked cars and poor vision.

I suppose my next option is to leave the car with a main dealer but, before doing so, would ask if any owners had experienced the same problem, and if so, what was the outcome/cure.

Many thanks,

Dave

It sounds like it might be an issue with the DSG to me. I'd find someone with VCDS or VCP and have them do a recalibration on the DSG controller. From what I've read it'll take a while but it's worth doing.

Does your "old school" garage have the correct diagnostic equipment, or is it a generic version? Are they VAG specialists or just nice local guys? If not it might be worth taking the car to a specialist.

Just a thought.

I appreciate your reply. In fact (and it's true!) I have never used the DSG facility - nor the parking aid! My middle name is not "adventurous!". However, I'll certainly follow up on your suggestion.

Many thanks,

Not certain of the answers to your sensible questions but I will check with them.  Nice guys they are but I also think that they are very capable. Their business has flourished over the years they have been operating and their crowded customer park is well populated with customers Mercedes, BMW's and Range Rovers (and not old ones being kept going). I shall, of course, check with them before considering a Skoda main dealership.

Thanks for your suggestion.

DSG refers to you gearbox - when it was serviced as there might be a problem with old/dirty oil.

Thanks for the clarification, jafo. My problem with cars (as with computers) is that I like driving them and, hopefully, not being concerned with technicalities. Sadly, at my age, I'm not likely to change my spots.

However, I'm beginning to compile a handy list of suggestions to follow up IDC.

Can you find a local Skoda / VW / Audi driver who can take your car for a spin and give you a comparative opinion on how it behaves. I'd expect your favourite garage man to be able to do this.

With such a low mileage I'd be inclined to take it out for an "Italian Tune Up" in manual mode before playing with 3 point turns.

My diesel is the same age and I reckon my 50K miles are low. Today's back road test was for the ABS :)
