Engine mount bolt access

Featured Replies

2006 Octavia mk2 1.9 Tdi BJB

The RH engine mount has to be removed in order to change the timing belt.  The middle triple square bolt of the lower part of the mount is close to the chassis and access with a socket is impossible.  In a link from this forum there is a description of changing the belt on a VW Jetta (same engine). That car has a hole, for access to the bolt, in the chassis; there is no such hole in the Octavia chassis.  Can any one provide a tip for removing this bolt?  I have seen bare mention of lifting/dropping the engine and maybe levering it - but no details.

I had some struggle with the same bolt on my Yeti. Managed to remove two of the three bolts.
The boltheads could take both M16 socket/wrench and M12 XZN.  I found it impossible to use either wrench or socket.
I hammered out the XZN bit from its 1/2" drive, and could now insert this in the bolt head.  Used a M12 wrench to turn the XZN bit.
Only released the bracket so far from the block as the belt tensioner could be replaced.  Bloody tight space..
Really hope yours has the XZN bolt head.

Great! Yes, my bolt has the 12 point spline. How do the professionals do it? Remove the engine?  Strange thing is, I have done this once, years ago, but being now in my dotage, I have forgotten how I did it then. I wonder if it is possible to drop or lift the engine to make the bolt clear the chassis? I had bought the kit in UK. A French garage has refused to use my kit and have offered 400€ without the pump or 700€ with a Skoda pump for the work. NOW I AM DAMN WELL GOING TO SUCCEED!  Thanks 175GDY

Adding this for information in case Search results show this :

On my 2012 Yeti ( 2.0 tdi ), normal practice seems to be to jack up this side of the engine to gain access to the bolt. As I recall it's a few inches at maximum. The other side engine mount doesn't need any loosening, etc. Place a decent block of wood under the engine to distribute the jack load.
