run these on the track car and they seem great for the money.

Pilot Exalto for good grip (I think) and reasonable wear rate.

In my humble opinion they are also excellent in the wet.

I've noticed talk of fitting 225s to standard wheels. Are they worth fitting? Is traction or handling improved? Other than cost are there any disadvantages? Is wet grip reduced?

225/45 is the way to go.

Sorry if ia m being stupid, but how can you fit 225/45 to a standard rim that is less wide.

I thought the 225 was the width and the 45 the height ratio.

7" rim will fit 185 to 235 tyres on it.

the flexibility of the sidewall allows a range of fitments.

narrow tyres on wide rims give the "euro look" lots of vw owners go for..

the lower the profile of the tyre the harder it is to stretch the side wall to meet the rim... i ran 215/35 on 8.5" rims which was silly..

currently run 205/50 on 8" rims on the bmw... but the 50 profile is high enough to cope.

wider tyres = more grip in general as you increase the contact patch.

& the 225/45 are cheaper than the 205/50

I thought it changed the contact area...keeping things almost equal, the narrow tyre gives you the long thin contact area, but fatter gives you lateral grip...

Least thats what I thought on tyrebible.

Of course there must be a difference between my bicycle tyres and an F1 car, hence I said almost equal...

I just had to change my NSR tyre, cost £74 for a p6000, phoned every number in yellow pages!! but when I got there, they checked the tracking told me it's 3mm out and wanted to charge £25 to adjust it! not a chance, 10 min job. Cheap tyres though. It was F1 tyres.

I'm still going to recommend the Toyo Proxes T1-R around £100 for 225/45/17's

24k on the fronts now but getting close to replacement.

I have Conti contact sports on the front which are just past their useable limit so I am going to change to some cheap Asymetrical tyres up front.

Are there any rules that state you shouldn't run a different width and profile on the front to the back? I know you shouldn't mix on the same axle......

Seriously though, I think its more to do with my journey to work.

eg: set off from driveway---->drive down slip road---->drive 32 miles on duel carriageway/motorway------>down slip road----> stop at lights/set off from lights----->drive 200yrds and turn into work car park---->stop. Going home is the reverse procedure.

As you can see the amount accelerting/decelerating is about as minimal as you can get, and this coupled with the lack of 'twisties' means that the tyres are just rolling along at max efficiency.

On several occasions, after setting off from home I have managed not to touch the brake pedal until stopping in works carpark so brake pads last forever too

yes, but the circumference of the tyre is smaller so the speedo will over-read.
