Ed from wheeler dealers

Featured Replies

Do you think he is a good mechanic?? One thing you can always say about him is that he does things properly and is very thorough.

Id class him as a competent mechanic, who us willing to go the extra 5ft to do something how it should be rather than cut the corners to save a few quid. But.. equally if your work is on tv youre not going to bodge too much...

Another key benefit of Ed is that he's free, or at least they never seem to factor his labour costs into the cost of doing up the car

This is exactly what I thought, pay Ed the profit they earn for his labour and they would just about break even everytime

Well i spose hes meant to be "you" doing the work so is "paid" by hus share of the "profit..

In recent series they have started to quote how many hours of work that Ed has done on the car.  As previously stated, they do these cars from the prospective of 'you' doing the work.  Hence, on what may be difficult jobs, or tasks probably more suited to specialist, he says, "a garage will take ...hours, and will normally charge £...".

The last couple of series based in the States, I've notices they tend not to go into too much detail, or reduce the more in depth steps when showing you work.  Not a big fan of the ' Catering to the Yanks Comedy Banter/Slap Stick Routines', Mike Brewer doing actual work on the cars (which he has never done on any of the previous UK based series, or the free advertising M*** B***** M***** gets!

Compared to me,Ed is a good mechanic.Amazing even!

All the work must take some time, even working full days.

The cynic in me thinks that he might not do everything himself

Ah but he doesnt do it all. He gets "his mate Paul to give him a hand". I reckon Paul is always there tunkering away too..

Fair play to him. Seems to be a man of integrity.

Been a few times ,when I've asked myself if what he's doing is safe or cutting costs. Mind you- I'd have loved to have a stocked garage like him to work on my cars. And I mean some older than ones on his show. Try ,for example changing a clutch on a Vauxhall 2000 FD on ramps, where you have to remove the bell housing ( which is massive and heavy) and then the box. I didn't have Paul, I had my next door neighbour, who was a blacksmith and could hold a housing and box steady with one hand.

I saw a car they restored on the show for sale, they do far more than they show on the show to ensure the car is perfect and they can't get sued!

I doubt I'll watch future episodes, Ed for me made wheel dealers.

Hopefuly he will get his own show and go back to basics.

Watching Ed's muted outrage (Even if it was "mocked-up") application and skill  in getting out from under another load of hot steamy stuff that the fat, bouncy, TP had just dumped on him was, for me, the USP/UVP.

But there you go, increasing sales, branding and all the other exploitational marketing concepts that mean so much to the few (And so little to the many) obviously take precedence.

Then again, 13 years of doing the same thing, under pressure, is probably enough for anyone and most people would probably be looking for something else.

The only other thing to determine is how much longer Brewer will remain, after the drug-crazed, psychotic  American audiences begin to get annoyed with their lack of understanding of his "Mary Poppins" English  and begin to realise that he doesn't resemble Philo Beddoe's obese, gangmaster elder brother.

It's disappointing. I always found Mike Brewer a bit annoying, but Edd China made the programme interesting and worth watching. Given the expected change in format (more Mike, less workshop) I can't see this working out well.

Pity half the cars they did never sold and have disappeared from the road

Maybe he is doing a show with Aaron Kauffman from. Fastnloud /joke

I like how he keeps growing.

Well you dont reach 11' 13"by stopping your growth at 16.. unlike my vast height of 5'6.5"

Edd seems pretty decent.

Mike (you know me - I'm a geezer, I'm a wheeler dealer) on the other hand..... I do hope that is an act, a fabrication, a caricature rather than a real person.

Also not convinced Mike is really much of a "wheeler dealer". The real "wheeler dealer" on TV, and a lot better informed as well, was Quentin Willson.

Mind you don't know how they managed to find so many old cars that were not totally falling apart with rust .

Cars they sold usually seemed like a pretty good buy for the purchaser.

Don't think I'll be watching the new all drama no content version of the show - There is already more than enough of that on TV.

We could do with more shows like the Mark Evans "is born" concept.  "A Car is Born" "A Bike is Born" etc. where there was time to get into some real detailed content.

Mind you in addition to this, what about a real replacement for Wheeler Dealers (under a different name) Keep Edd and get Quentin in as the Wheeler Dealer.

I watched this, it felt like he was genuinely excited about his future projects. I'll certainly be keeping an eye out.

All the more opportunity for him to promote more products.

What evidence have you for this statement? The early restorations were admittedly cheap due to the price bracket they were working with. The recent ones seem to have improved. I wonder how many of the posters on this thread could match Ed's spannering  / body / interior restoration skills. I'm not talking about plugging in VCDS either.
