First real problem

Featured Replies

pulled over into the hard shoulder, restarted the car and all now seems normal again.

Think I'll bring forward its first service to next week!

Am I the only one who is slightly confused now?

Guess what 'Warning Light showed' or what issue caused the need to stop on the hard shoulder.

Brilliant, not only did my car break but obviously I also lost the ability to actually post properly!

Anyway basically the glow plug light light came on and the car went into limp home mode when I was trying to overtake on the m5. Ended in a bmw almost rear ending me as I had no power to get out the way. He wasn't happy but realised I had a problem when I put my hazzards on and drifted to the hard shoulder.

turned off and on again and all now back to normal.

Skoda / VW will claim that like when there is a Power Loss / Loss of Drive with a DSG that you could roll to a place of safety.

Ye right,

this is why Brown or easy wipe interiors are so popular with VW Group Vehicles.

Wow.. A glow plug light should not enable limp mode !

I don't own a diesel but from dim and distant memory (possibly of other marques)... Does the glow plug light illuminating not also possibly indicate a blocked DPF? By blocked I mean FUBARed, not just 'needs a run'. That would certainly help explain the loss of power. It may well be different on the newer fangled cars with their fancy special DPF light, however.  Just a thought. OP, I hope you called Skoda Assist and got them to take a look? If not book it in ASAP. You don't want that happening again - you might not be so lucky next time.

^^^^ brought its service forward to next week so they can take a look. Didn't have anytime to call skoda assist this morning but will do on the way home from work if it does it again.

I'm surprised a glow plug light is even flagged as an issue..  However it could be a case of the glow light lit up and not root cause .

Op.. Did you get a message in the main cluster saying STOP or something similar. Regardless it will of logged a fault code for the dealer to see.

No, looks like this:

DPF-Light.png

Which could also indicate something other than DPF, faulty EGR sensor for example.

Yes mate I have seen those (hence the 'special DPF light' comment).  I was just referring to earlier (2010 onwards) experience of diesels which give the DPF light for 'Clogged up', and the DPF + glowplug lights for 'Fecked: return to dealer and bend over'. :D

SKODA can have this new advertising slogan for free from me, or VW if they want it.

Instead of 'Simply Clever'.

Trust in us, 'Your first real problem might well be your last'.

(We will never abandon you, well other than without power in the outside lane or with a HGV right up your chuff.)

Unfortunately it's done it again on the way home this afternoon. Again stopped in hard shoulder, turned it off and on again and worked fine for the remaining 15 miles home. Skoda assist unable to get a trained tech to me until tomorrow morning which is slightly annoying but I'll steal the wife's car tonight instead.

Thats a shame - hopefully they will read the codes tomorrow and advise

Hopefully just a dodgy sensor somewhere giving a false alarm in your case.

I had this on a Passat I had a while ago where the glow plug light flashes and it goes in to limp mode, unfortunately it didn't register any fault codes, but it turned out it needed a new EGR -  can't complain as it had 145k on the clock.

Just familiarising myself with the car owners manual and spotted this, which may be of help (P 36):

Preheating unit (diesel)

"(glow plug symbol) flashes - there is a fault in the engine management system. The system makes possible operation emergency mode - there may be a noticeable reduction in engine performance.

There is a fault in the glow plus system if the warning light (glow plug system) does not come on or illuminate continuously.

You can drive on, exercising appropriate caution.  Seek assistance from a specialist garage immediately"

Ah yes, sorry.  I didn't read your initial response properly.

I'll get my coat.....
