Can anyone advise me as to which brake pads I need for the front of my MY13 octavia ? When I search for them there appears to be several different types. 

Depends on the model.  If you give your car details someone will assist.

It's a MY13 1.4 tsi estate. I've seen brake pads with protruding clips sticking up from the back of the pads and some without.

I would recommend phoning your local TPS (Trade Parts Specialist). There is one based in Swindon (location from your profile). They should be able to give you a price for genuine and economy versions of the pads from your registration mark - having looked at the online prices yesterday at Euro Car Parts etc, I don't think that there will be much in it versus Genuine OEM ones from TPS, and you'll have peace of mind that they are the correct ones for your vehicle.
