Hard to put in 1st and 2nd gears

Featured Replies

When driving i can hear the gearbox whining  especially if i let off the gas pedal and it is hard to put in 1st and 2nd gears sometimes and sometimes they just slide in propperly.

My first thought was that the linkage needs re-aligned, but if the gears are whining as well, then you may need the gear oil topping up.

@KenONeill drove home from work gear changes were very smooth, so that seems to happen only at high revs.

@Minjukas That's entirely reasonable; the higher the engine speed, the more the shaft rotational speeds have to change when you change gears. Also, at least some people try to change gears (move the lever) faster when they're accelerating quickly, which reduces the time available for the synchromesh to to match gear speeds (which can lead to heavier or even blocked shifts).

@KenONeill ahh so i have nothing to worry about then, thank you for explaining this ^^

@Minjukas If you've got a whine, I'd still say to check the gearbox oil level.

Also, remember that I'm not driving your car; my Octy has a pretty rifle bolt gear change even when I'm shifting at just over 4_000.
