K&N Air filter on Yeti 110 TDI + timing belt question

Featured Replies

hi!

has anyone tried to the K&N filter model number 33-2865 for the Yeti 2.0 TDI 110?

Also,

I'm looking at buying the timing belt online to give to my mechanic,

when should one swap belt? mine is approaching 100k km, and is a 2012 model.

any recommends on a reputable brand/ online retailer?

thank you

It certainly is due for a new belt, doubt if you'll get many recommendations in Chile.

It's just my opinion but I wouldn't waste my money on a K&N filter for a diesel car as they get more then enough air from the standard set-up.

Normally a K&N filter would be a waste of money,

but then it is a location & environment thing,

so what conditions do you drive in in Chile and is there a chance of water getting to the air box?

K&N is for 'lads'.

actually, I have heard of the lad/chave factor of K&N, but it's more

because I would only buy once and not at inflated Chilean prices and on Amazon, the K&N costs LESS than buying an OEM airfilter in Chile *!!*

I am not asking for recommends in Chile because it's a tiny market and most people

give opinions from their rear pockets and not from experience, hence the reason I'm on briskoda : )

so, anyone having tried that specific model of air filter?

the OEMs are quite pricey here.

any recommends on brands and part numbers for the timing belt?

is it really necessary to get the water pump changed out as well?

I don't drive through deep water, mine is 4x2.

I used K&N filters years ago for the same reason, replace once and then lasts the life of the car with regular washing and re-oiling. It was very noisy though, as it replaced the original complete housing. I guess now they are straight replacements for the paper one and it would save you hassle getting new ones, particularly if you have a dusty driving environment.

Performance would not change though as the real benefit of these filters is on cars without turbos by reducing restrictions to a minimum on air flow into the engine when drawn by low pressure vacuum alone from the piston sucking in. From memory though you can buy quite a few paper filters for the price of one K&N?

The recommendation to change the water pump is for the hassle factor as it can only be accessed by removing the cambelt anyway, and the pump may fail before the cambelt is changed next time  at the required mileage. I have heard they roughly last about 80-90k miles? I would only go OEM for a cambelt as it destroys the engine if it fails.

I came across a really clever way to change a cambelt quickly and without special tools, if you are leaving the water pump as it is. Reduce the tension on the belt with the adjuster. Cut the existing belt longitudinally at its mid width for the whole length with a sharp knife whilst carefully rotating the engine with a socket on the crankshaft pulley retaining nut. Remove the outer half of the old belt. Slide on the new belt half way, all settings and alignments are preserved. Then cut off the rest of the original belt and slide the new one completely into place. No special tools needed!

Chile has a lot of dust I noticed during the 'Dakar'.

The standard unit does a better job in filtering to start with, remains quiet and performance is similar......why bother?.
