VRS MK 3 Dumped Oil

Featured Replies

I bought my dream VRS, just 3 weeks ago, and now I'm worried sick!! I drove from Brighton to The Isle of Skye last Thursday night, the car drove like a dream, yesterday, I travelled over to The Isle of Harris, this morning my car dumped all it's oil!!! The oil warning light came on, I stopped, popped the bonnet, checked with the dipstick, no oil!! Next think it was seeping out all over the road. I was on my own in the middle of nowhere, no phone signal. Anyway a kind couple stopped, and I called the AA, they sent a 'local agent' down from Stornaway. He couldn't see what the problem was, as he couldn't remove a tray? The car has now been recovered to Stornaway, to be looked at tomorrow. When I finally got back to the cottage where I had been staying, there was a small puddle of oil where my car had been parked overnight, so obviously it had been leaking. Rightly or wrongly, I am worried sick. I know nothing about cars, I'm stuck in the middle of nowhere, and need to be back in Brighton Wednesday morning. Am I right to be worried, or could it just be a simple problem? What would others do in my situation. My son has been trying to help, but with no phone signal its difficult.

  • OK let's get something straight here. (I'm NOT a mechanic, qualified or otherwise, just someone who has a brain inside my head) When an oil light comes on, in a MODERN car, it does NOT mean ther

That's why the plugs should be replaced as part of the service.    12 years in, all with VW Group, thousands of services done - never had a sump plug fall out or leak.

Sorry to hear this.

'Skoda Assist'.

Does the 2015 car still have a Warranty & Skoda Assist Cover.

Call them.

What Warranty have you, the remainder of the Manufacturers Warranty, or is it a Skoda Approved Used car with a 12 month Warranty.

Who serviced it before you bought it, or after you bought it?

PS.

I will ask the Mods if they can put in General Car Chat and maybe there will be a BRISKODA Member near that can help,

at least with a Land Line.

Hi There, the car still has the remainder of manufacturers warranty, which takes it up to June 2018. It was bought from Marshall Skoda at Reading. Nobody has touched anything on it since I bought it 3 weeks ago,

Kind Regards

Christine

I asked the mods if they can post someplace where any member on Harris might see it, but obviously that would need you to agree to that.

Sorry i am no place near.

Are you on Skye or Harris?

SKODA UK will have to arrange a Courtesy Car, or transportation if the car needs recovery South.

Marshalls Reading maybe responsible, you will see.

How many miles has the car done and were you told it was serviced before you bought it?

I am sure I have Skoda Assist, but unfortunately have left all the paperwork at home, although I am trying to get a friend to photo it and send it to me. The car has done 14000 miles, and had a pre delivery check, but I'm not sure whether that included a full service or not,

ŠKODA in partnership with the AA – have teamed up to provide you with roadside assistance 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. In an emergency breakdown situation please call ŠKODA Assistance on 0800 526 625

hope it all gets sorted

Thank You John, that could be useful, should I call them just to advise them of what's happened?

Skoda Assist use the AA. If you give your registration to Skoda Assist then they should sort it out.

Best of luck, it must be a very worrying situation to be in.

Hopefully the garage will just need to fit a new oil filter and sump plug (fitted correctly) and put in new oil and give it a road test and sorted.

All the best.

I should have mentioned that there ought to be a plastic card somewhere in the car that gives details of Skoda Assist. Try the document pack or stuck behind the sun visor.

Hi Christine,

That's not good, to have it dump oil like that, hopefully mechanic has just had a bit of finger trouble, and not torqued the sump nut up.

Hope you get sorted soon, they are great cars when working right.

Keep us posted please.

Trev AKA Aston_bodger

Was it the petrol or diesel vRS that got the new 'plastic' sump plug?

I voiced my concern back then when I first read about it on here, it just didn't feel right to me (is the sump itself plastic too?).

I'm all for cost and weight savings but at what price?

Hope you get is sorted, definitely ring Skoda Assist on the number posted earlier, this is exactly why they are there, to help you in unpleasant situations such as this! Remember you have already paid for this service in the price of the car.

Hope you get sorted OP. As others have mentioned give Skoda Assistance a call. Only used them once, but they were good!

The Diesel has a conventional metal 19mm sump plug.

It could be one of only a few things really:

sump plug has fallen out

the oil filter seal has split

the oil filter cap has fallen off

the drain plug from the filter cap has fallen out

the sump has been smashed

all apart from the last option could be attributed to negligent service work.

Shi**y situation, hopefully fixed soon with no lasting damage done to the car so that you can get on with your holiday.

On the plus side you have broken down in a beautiful and peaceful area of the world, there are far worse places to break down.  Have left my car for 2-3 days on end in laybys in Skye when we have gone off walking and come back with nothing vandalised, stolen or interest from plod.

OK, Update, after very little sleep and howling gales and sleet, oh and no internet, my car is ready. The 'sump plug'? had fallen out. I am still pretty pi$$ed off about all of this, and I have still got to drive back to Brighton on my own in it. I have emailed Skoda at Reading telling them I'm not happy. Problem is I have lost some of my confidence in the car, and no I'm not some dizzy blonde, I am a coach driver by profession, and drive all over Europe! What would be reasonable for me to suggest to Skoda? A full service to check that all is ok?

Christine

I would phone skoda and the dealer.

Sump plugs dont just fall off.

They do however fall off if they have not been tightened up correcty at a service.

I think you can guess the issue.

I wouldn't worry about it to be honest. Given the number of these cars on the road, if it was a design fault with the sump plug, there would have been more than the three instances recorded on here of this happening. Sure it shouldn't happen, but mechanics make mistakes. I would however press Skoda for an explanation as to how this could have happened, and also a good will gesture to cover the inconvenience caused.

what is more concerning is what will happen to an engine run with no oil in it.

mistakes happen doesnt cut it when expensive damage may have been caused.

This happened to a friend of mine in a 2014 vRS TDI on the M25.

Needed a new turbo, amongst other damage. Garage took full responsibility as they had serviced it less than 3000 miles previous.

I would definitely be getting it checked over at the very least, and keep an eye on the oil level in future, as well as watching for any blue smoke. Trouble is, internal damage may not become apparent for some time.

As others have said, you shouldn't lose confidence in the car, unfortunately they still need bolts torqued up. Sarcasm aimed at the dealer who last serviced or checked it, not you.

There is a little bit of concern with low oil pressure that would of occurred and if damage could have occurred. How long before seeing the light, were you able to stop?

But you have manufacturers warranty remaining and consumer rights from purchase all on your side. I'm sure you'll give the car some decent testing over the summer and if anything becomes apparent, you can raise it immediately. Looks very nice BTW.

It would be worthwhile documenting what has happened and keeping any records you have of recovery and the repair (sump plug replaced and engine oil).  Maybe even sending a copy to you selling dealer and SKODA asking how could this have happened and it has left your confidence dented not to mention safety put at risk?   Ironically, they probably should of left the car without checking anything before selling to you, unlikely you would have had this problem!

PS. We know how it happended, sump plugs don't come undone themselves but it would be interesting to see what their response is and some offer of a free vehicle next service or something else,  wouldn't be out of proportion with the situation.

Hi Everyone, I have the car back! A bus journey in the Outer Hebrides, and then a horrendous 60 mile drive in snow and sleet, I am back on The Isle of Harris. I spoke to the sales rep who I dealt with when buying the car, and he will ring me tomorrow. The garage in Stornaway, charged me £120, which I paid, so I need to get that refunded. I am inclined to insist on a full check of the car when I get back home, would this be unreasonable? Or what do others suggest? I am not looking to 'cash in' on this, I just want peace of mind that its reliable.

Wish me luck for my 720 mile drive back to Brighton tomorrow night!

Christine

Realistically, I'm not sure the possible sort of damage is very inspectable, that is the problem.  It is all internal. You could ask them to drain and change the oil again and check for fragments in the oil or the filter as well, but even if they do, it won't be conclusive.  Your 720 mile drive back should be a good test, I'm sure you'll be ok but in all seriousness, have the numbers to hand and a possible plan - I'm confident you will have done that now anyway.

Personally, I wouldn't think a free service on top of the re-imbursement cost is cashing in given the experience, inconvenience, stress and disappointment so far!
