Clonking noise when reversing

Featured Replies

I bought a 2014 Octavia 2.0 tdi earlier this week, all is well except I"m noticing a clonking noise when reversing, not when selecting reverse gear, but actually reversing after releasing the clutch pedal,I thought it might be the hill holder playing up,or the handbrake sticking, but after googling this I came up with a result on a vw forum, saying that there could be a chipped tooth on a cog in the gearbox, has anyone had this issue & know what this might be,I have a 1year skoda approved used warranty, which should cover this

It could also be a worn CV joint in the drive shift, does it occur whilst the steering has some lock on it? Would also be covered under the waranty I would magine.

Does it only clunk once? if so, it is most likely to be nothing more than brake pad slap. When reversing, the brake pads can move back a fraction, and the end stops 'click' when they hit the caliper end stops. If it's a missing/worn reverse gear tooth, it will clunk at regular intervals when reversing.

Thanks for your replies, the clonking noise seems to happen when i'm reversing out of a slight fwd incline after lifting the clutch pedal without braking, say doing a turn in the road facing the kerb,it doesn't happen when on a level road surface, nor when turning the wheel

Well the good news is it isn't your gearbox, good bet it's a drop link. Cheap and easy fix.

Excuse my ignorance,but what's a drop link?

Short tie bar that links parts of the suspension.

Thanks, the dealer is ringing me on Tuesday, i'll have it out with them, it's obvious they haven't given the car the checks that they're supposed to do

I've booked the car into lookers in Newcastle to get it checked out,the guy I spoke to reckons it could be something to do with the brake pads moving, apparently a common issue with Octavia & yeti, but seemed to indicate  that I would just have to put up with it,as there's no fix,I'll find out if that's the case on Monday

Update: Had it into Lookers Newcastle, one of the technicians came out for a drive with me,but couldn't replicate the clonking noise, except when selecting reverse gear & the gear lever jumps up,so they adjusted the linkage, they said it's not covered by warranty,so ended costing me £96.00 to solve the problem

A drop link conects the antirole bar to the front wishbone.

Why is it not covered by the warrenty when its been bought last week? Lookers took over benfield, addison group. Silbury skoda in cramlington is a realy good garage.

Ring skoda up and raise this, its totaly ridiculous that you end up with a bill on a car that you have purchased a week ago keeping in mind its approved used and not from arthur dalys car lot.

Agree, one week from purchase you shouldn't be paying a penny!

Edit: if you bought from a dealer that is....

I agree with you on the Lookers/Benfield thing, their attitude is really bad, well the skoda dealership is,I've dealt with their VW counterparts before & they're streets apart for service, but they said even a new car after 3 months is not covered for adjustments under warranty I've been in contact with hayselden in Doncaster where I bought the car since I discovered the problem, & they've been really helpful, they would've sorted it pronto, had I been local to them, they agreed to reimburse me without a quibble
