Spare wheel well - Octy Vrs

Featured Replies

Hi All

just had a blow out on the motorway and typically because Skoda doesn't supply a spare wheel I've been forced to call for breakdown assistance. This is something I've never done in 16years of motoring.  I have a few questions for you guys and hopefully, someone can help me out.

Can I simply have an 18" spare wheel placed in the wheel well?  will it fit ok?

Is there a polystyrene style insert that can be placed in the area to suit this wheel?

What do you guys do without a spare wheel?  To me, its a must on every level, and just can't believe nothing is supplied

Any help would be appreciated

I'm pretty sure you can buy both the wheel (18") and the toolkit from eBay.

Wheel was around £120 last time I looked, and the kit's around £40.

Not sure how it all fits in, but I assume you take out the polystyrene box that's there at the moment.

I believe that under the polystyrene box that is a bolt hole that kit will screw into.

Though in my car, the ICE install uses the same bolt to secure everything.

I have a spare wheel. I think even it was part of standard equipment for RS230, but maybe I have configured it additionally.

It is not a full size wheel, so it leaves PLENTY of space to put things around. Bottles of 2l of Cola can fit around spare tyre how huge the hole is.

I recommend you getting this smaller wheel, it is enough to continue jurney (with lower speed of course, up to 80km/h). I've driven it up to 100km/h, no issues, just put it on the back of the car.

I bought a "full size " for my car, steel wheel 16" with a full sized tyre, tools, jack and a polystyrene insert for my SE Combi. Not cheap though from Skoda. A space saver is available as well. Gloop and pump-no way.

i bought a kerbed full size alloy for the vrs and that fits ok, cost £90 off ebay with tyre.  It just means I dont have to rush to get the space saver off again when I get to my destination.  I wouldn't like to be away on holiday and have to rely on the space saver for a week or mess around looking for a new tyre while away but thats probably because Im lazy ;)

one here for 75 without tyre but it looks pretty damaged, id be asking if its bent, repaired etc so you have a case to return should there be any problems

Assuming your vRS isn't the later diesel with the 312mm brakes?

As above you can get the factory space saver 18" thin wheel, you could put a spare alloy in your boot but that does raise the floor half an inch or so.

third option is buy a 6.5x17 steel fit a standard 205 tyre, it fits under the boot floor, fits over the 340mm brakes and (with the proviso that it is different to the other three) you should realistically be able to drive on it for a while no problems if you had to.

The spare wheel on the 230 was an extra in the UK. When I swopped my Tdi Vrs to a 230 part of the deal was to keep my spare wheel.

You will also need to get a jack and tools if you intend to diy at the roadside. I called the AA last time as the location was very dangerous on M1.

cheers guys

My Vrs is the 2014 model so unsure if its the later one?

Would prefer a full-size alloy rather than a space saver if I'm honest.  Can anyone confirm if I will need the polystyrene insert for this?  Was toying with the idea of just picking up a mk2 18" alloy (as they are cheaper) and also buying the insert for that?

If this is possible can anyone point me in the direction required for these bits?

Ebay...

Although i have a mk2 the 18 inch wheel fits the hole fine and then i just bought a spare wheel kit.

just to bump this

will the 18" gemini alloy fit in the wheel well without lifting the floor? or could it be possible to let the tyre down to fit and then use the compressor to blow it up if and when needed?

Thanks

Gemini is the same size as my Alaris and it lifts the floor, albeit only half an inch or so. Can't see letting the tyre down making much difference as the width doesn't really change and you have the faff of pumping it back up if you have puncture.

6.5" wheel and 205 tyre is the standard spare size and there is not much room on top of that.

If you really want to fit the Gemini you could pack around the wheel with something to level the floor again.

Lots curbed Gemini's alloys around with suitable tyres already fitted
