Help! Replacing an Injector

Recommended Posts

Hi Has anyone got a guide on how to replace the injectors? one of mine failed on the way home from work, which was very lucky.

Here is the VCDS scan

yes coil pack!

I thought there was one for every cylinder.?

There is 1 pack for each cylinder, but moving the coil packs between cylinders will move the missfire to a different cylinder, cheap and easy way to diagnose a fault.

+1 I would start with a coil pack swap around of no. 4. Is it running badly consistently or just under certain conditions?

For a week now it was running badly if I tried to accelerate hard. So I've been taking it easy since then.

However today just setting off from lights it failed.

Does sound like a plug or coil pack hopefully. Change coil pack no 4 to say no 1. If that doesn't swap the problem to no 1, then either do the same with the plugs or replace them. Take it from there.  Coil packs simply pull off once you have the engine plastic cover off.

Should i clear the fault via VCDS before i change coil pack no 4 to no 1?

A mate suggested to change the sparks to some colder range spark plugs as I've decided to replace all of the coil packs now.

Can anyone suggest some?

I'd suggest just following good experienced mechanical advice from someone or people you trust. A mate who suggests something without much or any justification and without guidance what he is specifically suggesting is not that much help. I see no reason why you would need to change the standard recommended heat range which is 7 in NGK and 5 in Bosch AFAIR but if you use genuine or direct fitment products that will already be selected for you.

I don't think you explained that before? How modded? I don't think any stage 1 maps would require changes to heat ratings.  Even most beyond that, not all would.

The mapper should have been in the best position to recommend  what should be used with their product, so presumably what ever is in there followed that guidance?  If you are unsure what has been installed in the car in the mean time, perhaps contact the mapper and see what plug they recommend. I really doubt you need to change heat settings unless your car is heavily modified and I further doubt it is the cause of the misfire.

Running too hot a plug consequences are usually tip damage or pre-ignition which would probably be caught by the knock sensor. Have a look at the plug condition, does it look like they are suffering from overheating?

So I swapped the Coil pack no 4 to no 1, clear the codes. However engine management light is still on when i ran VCDS again, it was still saying that this is a misfire in cylinder 4 which leads me to believe that its most likely to the spark plugs.

So the plan is to change all the coil packs and spark plugs.

My car has 345bhp running with a T04 turbo upgrade along with all the upgrades required to run at that power, so stage 3.

Thanks for taking the time and sending the link, it's really useful.

I don't know, but will try to find out.

I can send you mine for free if you want them? They're used obviously, but I've just realised I bought the wrong ones so I'm about to replace mine.  The ones I have currently are these: https://www.awesomegti.com/shop-by-car/audi/a3-8p/ngk-iridium-x-colder-spark-plug-set-2-0-tsi-and-fsi-turbo/

They'd suit your car and are only 15k miles old.  Welcome to them for nowt if they're of any use.

It's running standard spark plugs!

You may need colder plugs then.  Like I say, you're welcome to mine, even if you want to try before you buy new. I'm order my replacements today.

Yes please! i'll send you a pm with my details.

In the meanwhile i may just buy 1 sparkplug from ECP to see if its the sparks or may just move No 4 to No 1 to see if VCDS recognises the change.

I've replaced the spark plug in Position No 4 (far right) and replaced the coil pack in No 1 ( far Left!) its idling like normal but doesn't sound great.

This a new fault:

I'm fearing the worst for no. 4. That is a lot of oil that has forced it's way up the thread from the combustion chamber. I can't see what the plug tip is like but it must be burning quite a lot of oil. For it to be causing mis-fires I guess it is down in compression too. You could test, but I sense this is heading into rebuild territory.
