Do the 2.0 tfsi engines drink juice ?

Featured Replies

Do the 2.0tfsi drink juice , are they really thirsty ?

And has opposed to other similar engines how do they compare

Over a variety of road types to various places of work, I usually get 37mpg. That's working it out full tank to full tank, as the on board computer is not usually accurate. I make good progress, so it is not like driving miss daisy. If I drove that way, I could easily get over 40+ mpg.

What year is yours ? And how many miles is the engine on ?

I have the superb mk1 1.9tdi 130pd before dpf engine at the moment which is cheaper to tax and obviously get more mpg .

But was just wondering how much more a week I will need to fill up I get around 130miles out of £20 diesel in this superb if I do motorway journey for Bolton to Blackpool and back 40mile each way it normally covers that but will have to top up again early .

How many miles would you say you get out of £20 petrol?

The year of my car is 2011, shown to the left side of my original post. Mileage is just coming up to 70k. Just topped up tonight on the best Tesco momentum fuel, £120.9 pence per litre. Spent £50 which covered 340 miles since last fill. By my calculation, that is 136 miles per £20. If you are only getting 130 miles per £20, your diesel economy is really poor. If I was only driving on the motorway, my fuel figures would be even better.

I can't see any pictures of your car maybe because I'm using the full mobile version of the website.

The car I'm looking at is 2008 , tfsi on 138000 miles .

Is yours a FSI or TFSI ?

Do you think 138000 miles is too much for one of these engines ?

Do you know anybody who has one of these engines on this or past this sort of milage?

The car im thinking of buying has all service history , and its says Cambelt was done at 70,000 and at 126,000 with a recent service too .

I've tried to help you already with advice I've gained in over 40 years of driving, owning, buying and selling cars

I'll try once again

each car is its own identity certainly there will be facts and figures regarding AVERAGE mpg, cost to run, service requirements and even owners opinions of each group of the model of car in question but there's the rub, it's an AVERAGE, no one can actually say will an individual car drink fuel will it be good on a longer run, it depends on how the car has been treated, it's all well and good a car having full service history if it's been ragged stupid with 5 up or just used to do tottle down to post office once a week to collect the pension both extremes will have equally adverse effects

the value of any car is what the buyer is prepared to pay and the seller prepared to accept, because car A sells at a higher or lower price than an identical car B it doesn't make either the lesser or better car, that's just not how it works

a £3000 run of the mill " lesser " model of most cars will be ( usually ) a better buy than the £3000 singing all dancing top end version of the same model, basic maths works, the £3000 top end model is considerably cheaper compared to the original new purchase point ( as said before all sought after cars reach a bottom end selling price at which they are usually going to need ' work and or money spent ' on them to realise their true value )

Imho unless your purchase budget is the top end market value of the specific car you wish to buy and you can afford to wait until the right car is on offer that YOU feel suits YOUR requirements and expectations, then my advice would be to buy the best example of the type and style of car that suits your daily user requirements, rather than risk buying a basket case with all your wish list and extras

or buy ( or privately lease ) a new car built to your specification including all the " I wants "

otherwise trust me whatever car you buy you will always be of the mind it is a compromise and almost certainly a more suitable car will catch your eye once you've splashed the cash

hope this genuinely helps

Dave

ps

I've never meet anyone who can tell if a car is good or bad from reading an advertisement or looking at photos

I'm thankful for your advice , and your opinions and knowledge . I know every car is different that's why I'm just trying to gauge different opinions , from different peoples experiences .

So what's your experience on high milage cars ?

138000 miles on a 2008 vrs 2.0 tfsi ?

Have you known these to last well beyond ?

I know you can in no way tell what a car is like of pictures but it has been chaved up a bit.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/252970548191

Is my experience actually relevant as it won't actually be about any car you viewing,

I haven't owned or driven a petrol car for some 17 years but a quick browse on eBay shows many petrol cars for sale at 100k plus with warranties from " dealers " who rely on the public buying on their reputation for a living, or put another way, they wouldn't stock higher mileage cars, full stop, if they kept getting unhappy buyers

way of viewing milages is that to warrant purchasing a diesel car new most buyers need to average ( that word again ! ) 20k miles a year most considerably more ( I used to average 1k a week servicing alarm systems in Oxfordshire, back then my car was serviced ( oil and filter change !! ) every 9k no major issues, other cars on the fleet were doing 3-5 k per year and were always giving trouble, too little journey time engine never got hot, battery would recharge properly etc

I'd have no issue buying a 3-4 year old car either fuel, with say 120k by one owner with FSSH it's when you start looking at the same car as it gets older with the addition of one or more private owners that haven't cared for the car that you are potentially buying a car with future issues

( I'll let you into a knowledgeable car buyers secret, just in case you haven't been told yet !! many many buyers buy an ex - company car with say 90k on it they buy it cheap due to its ' high mileage ' " not forecourt stock " then they run that car for say 3 years so the car now has 120 k quite likely they won't even bother to have it fully service, just replacing consumables, now they car has average miles so it's again worth ' market value ' maybe very close to the original purchase price, chuck a full service at the car fingers crossed this doesn't highlight any major component issues, which they don't have to declare anyway, put it up as a private sale, Bob's your uncle, cheap motoring )

I'd avoid any car like the one you linked like the plague, a well kept example of a ' lesser ' spec' car in original cared for condition would be a far better bet

Ive a 140k ex met police 2.0 fl dsg, I get around town which is most of my motoring 28mpg recored on an app, if I get longer journeys itll go up to 35, if I get a really decent run ill get a little more but never cracked 40. But I do drive it like a performance car most of the time point and squirt its so addictive. Again id echo the words of davidwhite, avoid that sort of chavved up mobile unless youve bought it and done the mods yourself.

Yes been looking at it again today , there was a rattely noise upon starting the engine from cold and I only let it idle for 2 mins then knocked it off and made the same noise when turning it off. While the engine was running tho I took the oil cap off and the engine nearly cut out . that can't be normal even on a cold engine , anyway its not rained today and the bodywork was worse than I thought which I knew would happen because when I first viewed it was raining .

Ive seen an ex motorway undercover police one for sale on autotrader , do you mean there not advisable ?

My brother in law works for the police ( Thames Valley ) as a civilian driver, he swears ALL police cars are meticulously serviced and want for nothing which stands to reason really, they normally go to one auction house near Oxford I think when the come up for sale ( no need to avoid them far from it they can make a good buy if you don't mind the rubber bangs where accessories where fitted )

I think the reference was to avoid " chaved up " cars, but it looks like you've already drawn that conclusion at least on the one you linked to a previous post

that should be

rubber bungs ........

Yes I would think they would be serviced well . he offered it me for 3300 obviously not going to do it .

Referring to the engine nearly cutting out has soon as I cracked open the oil filler cap . what would this mean ?? Just so I know for more viewings of others , is this a symptom of poor compression ? Head gasket failure or something?

I mean even that cat D one I went looking at with only two service stamps in it was a lot smoother and engine really quite , he's still not sold it yet , wants 2800 with full mot.

This is the ex police one ive seen

Look at this on eBay http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/222529724130

If I was looking there is a L & K 1.9tdi 57 plate just gone on flea bay

ok it's in Lincoln not sure how far that's from you but it gives you an idea what's available

sorry I don't know how to add links not that computer literate

Managed to add screen shot eBay item number bottom right of photo, hope this allowed

disclaimer car has absolutely nothing to do with me, I'm trying to add credence to my previous advice to OP

That police car you linked up to would certainly be worth a look quite possible the best car you've flagged up for comments  in all you previous and current posts

( ain't you contacted the seller yet ?? )

  • Author

No not contacted them yet , all 3 kids are off tomorrow because of voting , so be Friday now . Lincoln is a bit far , just because I used to go travelling before I had children , but don't have enough hours in the day now .

I'm in Bolton ive seen a couple of l&ks.

I'd have to get the vrs badges and spoiler tho I don't like the normal look of the octy.

If we didn't have kids I'd probably have a golf mk2 nice classic .

What do say on an engine nearly cutting out thought when taking off oil filler cap ?

I'm no mechanic and other than check oil level tyre pressure I leave it to local garage, I look after his alarm system he keeps an eye my cars ( at mates rates, it suits us both )

but at a guess and it's only a guess I'd have thought removing the oil cap ( which is questionable with the engine running anyway ? ) would increase a pathway for extra air to enter the engine so if this is the case it would imbalance any air flow monitoring causing issues with the ecu, it may indicate a faulty sensor allowing the imbalance to happen at a guess

( my oily rag and dirty hands days ended back in the late 80's when they started putting plastic engine covers over everything even then my tool kit was a spark plug spanner, a feeler gauge,  a 12 volt bulb with long leads and a Haynes manual )

hope the police sourced car is still there Friday, that imho is worth a good look ( not that I'd buy it I'd be more likely to view the L&K, at my age I prefer comfort over Vrs badges and go faster stripes !! )

Oil cap off whilst running creates a post-throttle air leak via the PCV valve. Wouldn't expect the engine to like that.

I'm not 100% sure but the 2.0 engine of that year may have a dpf, I think the view out there in briskoda land if it has is " avoid "

this kinda makes that one in Lincoln look excellent value ??

They should of put all these toys on the vrs model

Yeah, but I think that kinda takes the ' sporty ' image away the L & K has always been about extra toys and luxury

did you contact seller of the ' police ' car ?

I'm going looking at it , I think the seats will be filthy tho maybe a lot of interior scratches for chains keys , and general work wear and tear .

How much more power should the 2.0tfsi have over 1.9tdi pd130 ?

I have test drove a 2.0tfsi and when on A roads or overtaking on motorway it didn't seem to have much more or any proper mindblowing power over my 1.9tdi . will this just be down to diesels having more low end torque ?

What year and how any miles on the TFSI? If high mileage, has it ever had the valves cleaned?

It should feel a fair bit quicker than a pd130 in a Superb.

100k its on , I don't know about it having the valves cleaned .

Maybe its because I wasn't pushing the pedal hard enough cos I was on a test drive .

I think the one I tested is the 170bhp .

I tested another one and that was about the same tho .

Have you been in both diesels and petrols?

I don't know if its because the Octavia 2008 is smoother than my superb 2003 tho like I was doin 80 - 90 on motorway and didn't feel like it in the octy .

Like going on a new rollercoaster then a old wooden one , u feel the speed more on a wooden one lol
