Sat nav recommendations ?

Featured Replies

Although I've not found my first Octavia quite yet, when I do the only real thing I want to add is a sat-nav system, preferably one that is portable and not hard-wired.

I understand that the 1.8T vRS did not come with factory fit sat-nav (even as an option ?).

So, anyone like to give a personal recommendation for a particular piece of kit ?

I'm looking for a standalone unit, not a PDA add-on.

Thanks in advance,

HF :)

I hear the Tom Tom 1 is the business.

I use a Mio A201 PDA myself but the Sat Nav receiver is built-in so the unit is standalone. No mucking about with bluetooth addons.

It's got the new SiRFstar III Chip so its lightning fast recalculating your journey if you change your route or take a wrong turning. The Co Pilot 6 Software I got for mine has as good UK coverage as Tom Tom and it's better than Tom Tom for coverage of Ireland too. Cost £380 including the Co-Pilot software but it was worth every penny especially considering you get a Windows Mobile 5 based PDA as part of the deal.

I know you don't want a PDA solution, but I have a Dell x50v (high -res screen) running TomTom 5.2, latest plus maps (cross border route planning), and a hardwired GPS receiver. A nice neat installation.... But a TomTom 1 is probably the way to go for you (apart from the cigarette power cable running over the dash...)

another vote for tomtom. dicks on the navman software et al and the tomtom1 is great for the money. get the free speedcamera Points Of Information (POIs) from www.pocketgpsworld.co.uk and it acts as a road angel, too. some kind soul posted skoda dealer POIs here a while back too.

if you've got a smartphone you can run it pretty well on there: i do this myself with a bluetooth GPS unit.

Thanks for the info folks, please keep it coming...

You can tell I'm a newbie to all this, 'cos I hadn't realised that some decent kits are PDAs with GPS add-ons. Doh ! What I should have said is that I'd like an integrated GPS antenna, not an external jobbie with wires everywhere.

To clarify, something like the Mitac Mio sounds good, just that I'd probably only ever use it for navigation.

TomTom Go is the nutz!

It even doubles as a hands free and you can read your text's on the roll, full Monty!

Check out the TomTom web site.

pocketgps have just released their last set of free POI for speed cameras... future ones need to be purchases....

Excrement !!!! Are well, here we go ,,,, everything has it's price. :thumbdwn:

I have the Garmin i3 (reviewed at the link above). Great bit of kit, only bummer is the lack of touch screen for entering postcode etc - but the click wheel is pretty straightforward. Top notch for the price!

Nice choice as that's what I have  Bluetooth GPS rxer for me
