Sport Mode v Eco Mode MPG

Does pulling back on the stick just put the gearbox in sport mode or all settings?

I've got the DSG also and it feels like it changes the throttle map as well. "Sport" mode from the dash changes the steering, sound aktuator (mines turned off), LSD settings (mines a 230), adaptive cruise catch-up etc, but there's no difference in throttle response in sport or normal mode when the DSG is in 'D'. I've not noticed any difference either when going full manual in Sport or Normal mode.

Mine stays constantly in sport mode and the DSG in 'D' (apart from the odd eco commute when traffic is rubbish). As someone has said previously in this thread, you just knock it down to switch between S and D. S seems noticeably faster, and somehow much better for overtaking than keeping it in D with your foot to the floor, or going manual.

Very odd, could just be me!

  • I can't see the point in these different modes.  I leave mine in sport and use my right foot to 'change modes'.  If I want economy, I don't use the pedal like an on/off switch.  If I want to make swif

Just the gearbox I learned yesterday. I had thought it was the car, I stand corrected.

I have set mine in eco mode, but frequently when required, give the stick a tug backwards to give that bit more umphhhhhh

Can't stand the car in ECO mode.....feels more sluggish than a new Seat car I test drove in 1994...

I use my right foot it determine how much pressure to apply, & I don't need to have the engine electronically strangled because I have to mash the pedal down all the way & have no self control.

I have recalibrated my MPG so 1% accuracy is the worst it gets & I get 42mpg to 46 mpg on average & have seen 52mpg on long trips..

140Ps engine & manual gearbox

I think it was in one of the really bad Golf R threads in the general car section that one R owner admitted to driving his 90% in eco mode...

He took offence when I stated he is wasting his money & killing the car & would have been better of buying an UP/Citygo...

As to Warmish Hatches, the OP's is a 1.4TSI Octavia Estate so not even luke warmish really.

Still wondering about these motorbikes that were getting overtaken.

MK3 manual Octavia 1.4TSi 140PS & 250Nm (184lbft)...0-62 8.4secs

MK1 Octavia VRS 1.8T 180Ps 235Nm (173lbft)...0-60 7.9secs...

MK4 Golf GTI 1.8T same engine as above 7.6secs...

The current 140PS engine has low down torque & is way more powerful than the specs lead you to believe .I've surprised many a driver in a faster car ..mind you I have quicker reflexes & know how to drive my car, this pays divideds compared to the average "asleep" driver

Ye ye, we know that, really really nippy until something Hot passes you.  Stealth mode Golfs are dead quick with other drivers not even aware they are in a race.

Anyway really really fast at 70 mph as fast as another car at 70 mph.

As to 30-80 mph, not even luke warm, 140ps or 150ps heavy cars.

If everything in life was as nippy as a 1.4 TSI 150ps then why would anyone bother with anything with a bit more pace...

On those private roads that everyone seems to drive on.

The reason people like more powerful cars is image...like in my post a few up..some bloke with a Golf R & spends 90% of his time in eco mode pussy footing it around...

I have driven various Audi S3 & Golf R inc R32 properly down my back roads.....at various speeds, however the only conclusion I find is to really appreciate that power & handling above & beyond what a "lowly" 140Ps Golf can achieve is to drive the faster car faster....

I like to push the envelope within the legal limits, & really feel that I am driving, (I was taught by a rally driver & test driver ex Ford/Mitsubishi/etc)...& I can do this in a lower engine car. To get the same feeling in an MK7 Golf R you are very deep into losing your licence....& as there are no proper racing tracks near me (only old runways) I prefer a nippy car at the expense of outright top speed of over 140mph

Ye ye, wonderful to Grantown & Carrbridge and Tomintoul and all around you, cloak of invisibility and away you go, catch those sleepy drivers and a driving god.

Have fun.

150 turbo bhp feels rapid enough to me. I've driven many cars since the 1970s and I know what I like me owd duck.B)

Harley lookalike dawdling behind an oldish Z750 Kawasaki IIRC at 55mph ish in an NSL..

Is this a site for Skoda enthusiasts or insult a fellow Skoda owner who is giving genuine views on their car? I've liked this site until recently.

I'm pretty thin skinned I guess and find this "banter" unpleasant as a deaf OAP.:wondering:

Don't worry it's usually the same people which can be annoying, but you learn to ignore or give as good ...

I used to like that saying, but I think its more the case of "I've got a big **** & I'm waving it around for you to see, but I have feck all idea what to do with it".......just like loads of show offs in high power cars who act as muppets & crash them doing something easy because they only have the skills & mind set to handle nothing more complex than a sponge.....just look on UTube...

There's no direct relationship between the size of ones bank balance and their driving talent.

I both know & like Gerry that you're talking about, he's a nice guy whom understands at his age his reactions & driving isn't whats required to drive a Golf r on the ragged edge. Doesn't stop him being a petrol head whom wants to own & occasionally drive fully HIS car.

I have 1.4tsi & yes it can be fun to drive enthusiastically, I have vRS245 on order & I'm sure that'll be fun too, call me what you like but, niether makes me feel like getting my willie out or waving it.

Yes pulling back the DSG stick does alter the DSG gear change level & the throttle map but, doesn't affect the steering or DCC.

Everyone is free to buy what ever car they chose, but those in bigger fancy cars who don't "drive" them should not look down on us in lower spec cars who do "drive" them.

I just find it very funny when like in my old Fabia I used to leave bigger fancier cars on the back roads..who would then overtake in a mad hurry on a straight & then carp themselves at the next set of twisty bends...in the meantime I would drive my Fabia through the bends faster than them & catch them up...(over my local road of the A939).

I ain't the best driver, but I know my car & know my roads & know more than most how to drive....driver skill outweighs car power & fancy badge ever time. I can afford to pay cash for a very nice fancy car with a very nice fancy badge, in the same league as "Bossfox", but he has a few race tracks near him & tracks the cars (as I would do)....I have none near me so the fancy car would be waste of time on our roads to actually "drive" it IMHO.

My 1.4 gives me the power & response & handling & I can push it at 9/10s if want to very easy...& not have to totally worry about losing my licence or wondering of the county is big enough if I have an accident....

I'm on my jollies soon, so I might drive the breadth of the country in Eco and the other in sport, just got to resist that button press...

As promised!

Circa about 90miles into my journey, eco mode all the way from my house!

Probably would've got 61-62mpg if it wasn't for a bloody accident!

Forgot to take a photo of the return journey in sport mode.

Pleased with 60 though, my VRS hasn't touched much past 55mpg

I think you have to be careful before making boasts and claims about overtaking motorcycles etc etc, then it transpires out they were Harleys and Z750s :D  I think you held out on us on that information but fair play for fessing up and you were doing it in spiriting jest and in which case that's fine.

But is it not all just banter and if you banter about your prowess of "taking" cruiser bikes you can be owed a bit back in return ? or are we required to be extremely tight nit here like a military unit....I didn't sign up to this ! :D

Look, I'm now bikeless as I thought it was just a matter of time with driving standards and I've had my fun on 2 wheels....

But a full fat petrol vRS would definitely worry my old bike to a fair extent ( standard, 955i with 149hp) and that would have been 12 years old if I hadn't sold it this year,

but a 1.4 Octy would not have worried me at all, but I'm sure you know this.

I think the vRS ( particularly a mapped on) might have on top speed, but not acceleration......and at top speeds I'd have got a bit worried about quite a few factors, but much, much more expensive equipment would be shown a clean set of heels by even a relatively old superbike.

And they even make 600cc bikes closer to 900cc performance sports bikes now due to weight etc, so I hope you weren't really racing them poor old bikes :)

To be honest getting into full chat on a bike though can be quite intimidating conditions depending which is so many variables on a bike. S'why I decided to get out of it because despite touch wood having been relatively clean there is always that time when something might go wrong, so I decided to stick to ( more boring ) 4 wheels. Sorry but even vRS is more boring. Even a mapped Golf R would be more boring. This is life, bikes are better than cars for cost/performance ratio I'm afraid. Every car loses :D

It's fairy dust, it helps my car fly...

What does sport mode in a manual do to the life expectancy of the clutch?. I expect shortens it considrably. In the 2l diesel the gear changes are far from smooth if you try do do them in a timely manor, the exact motivation for using sport mode in the first place. At least in normal mode the throttle responce is sufficiently subdued having the effect of smoothing out the gear change so it feels more progressive.

This is the reason higher powered bmw 330 and 335 only come in auto, so the throttle imput can be backed off momentarily so the clutch plate dosent get knackered.

I find the difference mpg is inconsequential between both modes, also foot flat to the floor, the diffence in acceleration is also small. It just gives the sensation its quicker due to the rougher gear change.
